----------------------------------------------------------

Just a small update. I just finished my second FTP test of the year. Last week was my hardest week of the year TSS wise, but I've been setting some PB's so here they are:

Weight - 55 kg (I gained a kg since spring ), that's not a PB
1 min - 522 W, 9.5 W/kg (last Saturday)
5 min - 335 W, 6.07 W/kg (last Friday)
60 min - 267 W, 4.85 W/kg (today - indoors w/-17 TSB)

I hope this translates to a good result in our state HC championships in 10 days.

That's pretty damn impressive. Absalon must be pushing 6+ in order to ride away from the field like that.

Hopefully I'll be able to post an update soon before the start of cyclocross season. I just did a 22 minute hillclimb at 309 watts (310 NP), which I am really happy about since I've been stagnant at about 303 watts since march (but still within the margin of error for the PT ).

I am sure Absalon is over 6. I know Roland was well over 6 at his peak.

The top women, particularly the small ones, are actually fairly close to the top men in watts per kilo. It goes to show you that watt per kilo isn't everything, absolute wattage is important.

I think one reason for this is that the bike is usually forgotten in w/kg.For very light weight riders the weight of the bike makes big difference because the bike usually does not scale down with rider size (especially on road with minimum weight.)

So how was that value for functional threshold power obtained? (Just curious...it's right in-line with what I'd expect based on other data, e.g., http://www.cyclingpeakssoftware.com/...11/profile.asp)

Using an SRM. It was the average power for the first hour of an hour and 15 minute hill climb.

I will leave my other listing there as a reminder. Started 3 months ago, with 100 watts for 15-minutes.

First ride with PowerTap and first ride monitoring power since 1995. From the perceived "exhaustion" I think this is really the first hard ride I've done in something like 12 years. Way harder than all the hilly rides I've been doing that I thought were hard. Required stuffing it into a bigger gear for the last minute to keep the power constant with the prior 19 minutes.

It'll be interesting to see what the effect of my meds is as I did this test without - they've been giving me throat problems to the point where I can't speak too well

Thou shalt not post results whilst still feeling like crap... and forget to multiply by .9

Whoopsie.

Thankfully I'm a few pounds lighter and have blown the cobwebs out of the lungs but God damn my legs are effing sore these days. It's been interesting to note power, heart rate and perceived hip flexor destruction and hamstring death...

So, for the 'guestimate' from a 20 minute test, do I multiply by .9, .93 or .95 - there seems to be a few different values being used for this one.

0.95 is often used however it can range from 0.92 - 0.98.

A few thoughts:

i. Not everyone has same ratio of 20-min to 60-min power. Overall fitness as well as one's anaerobic work capacity can influence the ratio not to mention the test protocol (i.e. what you did before the 20-min test).

ii. This ratio can vary up/down for an individual through training.

iii. It's usually a good idea to have a 2nd check point for FTP.

e.g. if you did a full blown effort of ~ 5-min and used that along with your 20-min result in the Critical Power model, that might help you nail it down a little tighter.

Here are my thoughts on methods used to assess FTP:

Thou shalt always use the latest list to update as well - by using an old one you've wiped out more recent updates....
