Default Criterium Power Output Analysis

Downloaded my PT data from a 30 lap (1 mile laps) crit last night and now suspect my FTP is too high. Here is the data:

Avg. Speed: 26.7 mph
Norm. Power: 230w
Avg. Power: 195w (30% zero power, sitting-in)
IF: 0.863
Avg HR: 173 bpm
HR Max: 193 bpm
Avg Cadence: 96 rpm
FTP: 265w (Power Tap- based on 2 yrs. worth of data and FTP tests)
LTHR: 175 bpm

I would think if my average HR for the crit was 173 bpm (right at my LTHR) that my IF should be in the 0.95-1.05 range...NOT 0.863. So the only way it can be in that range is if the FTP were lower..like 255w instead of 265w. Yes/No? Man, I'd hate to think my FTP went down. Thanks Rob

HR is irrelevant in a crit.

Well, was it a really hard race or were you working but doing it OK?

Alex, good question. It didn't seem like a hard race..legs/lungs felt great..but when I woke up this morning I was a bit stiff/sore. When I looked at my PM data, I saw that during each lap I was averaging 2-3x30s intervals at 400-500 watts to hang-on..when I wasn't pedaling hard, I was sitting in and soft-pedaling...so it was on/off/on/off. I just didn't know if there was any correlation btwn HR and Power Output when you're doing a Crit..or if it's not steady state enough (too variable)..which is why I asked. Thanks a bunch. Rob

Well if it didn't feel that hard, then an IF of 0.85-0.95 sounds about right to me.

There's always a correlation between HR and power - but unless I was riding off the front of the bunch I'd look at neither. I'd be looking for the riders who were riding up front that looked pretty smooth and concentrating on glueing myself to their back wheel....

400 to 500 watts sounds like you were having fun - so do you prefer trying to pedal a 13 or push a 12 when you're suffering?
