It comes across that LA/Bruyneel were subverting his talent. But Floyd is so naive it seems. LA and Bruyneel could see Floyd's aspirations. Everyone knows that on USPS/Discovery it was ALL about ensuring a Lance victory and nothing else. Domestiques are supposed to soft pedal the ITT. Asking for a practice bike (when quite often it was difficult for Lance to get one in time to properly trial it before the race) was like saying, "f*#K the soft-pedal, I want to advertize my abilities to all the other teams so I can get a team leader job or a better salary".
In one instance, Bruyneel, anticipating Floyd was going to ride the Tour de France ITT hard, reminded him to go easy to save himself for the next day's stage. Floyd came in 22nd(?) or something and Bruyneel was irate. Floyd said he was going easy. Anyhow he went on the next day to do a great job leading Lance up the final climb, which supposedly proved his point.
I think it was obvious to Lance and Bruyneel that while Floyd was shy and naive, he also had a "I won't to show them and everybody else how good I am" streak that risked conflicting with the Blue Train's goal. He obviously had aspirations to be a team leader himself.
