well it's not the same as it was when I was a kid...we just ran around outside free...rode our bikes wherever. Came home when it started getting dark and you could hear your mom calling your name from the front porch.

I really really wish it was still like that...

Sounds like if you are into cycling you spend a fair amount of time outdoors now...

What do you mean now? I knew people who flunked out because they would stay up all night playing computer games.

One guy I knew must have spent at least two thousand hours one year playing Empire, a multi-player networked Unix game sort of like Civ. Games can last a few months, and there is an advantage to spending a lot of time per day playing. He would play several games at once. For some accelerated, weekend games he would stock up on junk food and play the whole weekend, never sleeping.

He actually graduated. He spent several years as a total game addict, putting school on the backburner. Eventually he came to his senses and did the minimum required to get a degree. The last I heard he was doing some sort of database work.

He's probably addicted to Evercrack these days.

It isn't just games. Before all the chat and instant messaging protocols were invented and became ubiquitous, there were MUDs, which were designed to be multi-player RPG games but often devolved into places for virtual socialization. Lots of girls were addicted to those. You get to build a small world (with text descriptions) and sometimes a social order. They would become small virtual communities, complete with buildings, cities, etc.

I remember Dungeons and Dragons had some serious afficiondos when I was at school. I played it all Saturday once... but that was about it. It lost its fun when one of the guys that I was playing with spent 2 hours throwing the dice until he came up with a set of rolls that made his character invincible. I was like "Dude... just make up the numbers... and save yourself 2 hours of your life."
