Agree. IMO, it is fine to crop the picture, play around with levels to bring out shadows/highlights, sharpness, etc. But beyond a certain point, one has to ask whether the photo is more CGI than real.

I'm afraid of course that some of the impact is lost looking at it over the net..but oh well...

I fell in love with his stuff... especially the one titled We All Draw Circles. Also really liked Crows Landing and You Gave Me Rain. They are all great though.

And Cranky and Eden, he will be at an Art Fair in Bellevue at the end of June...isn't that part of Seattle?
Reminds me of a cross between Ansel Adams and one of the Wyaths. In fact, check out the similarity between his dunes and Adam's dunes.

I also think that when the revolution comes, Thomas Kinkade should be one of the first put against the wall.

Actually, what he does is EXTREMELY difficult. He takes an image from a large format camera (think of is as a 10,000 megapixil camera that takes years to learn to operate artistically, and has no automatic functions), digitizes them (file sizes that will take up the space on your HD in a couple of photos), and then goes to work in the same manner that a traditional photographer would use other devices to burn and wash certain parts of a picture. After that, he colorizes certain parts of the photo to achieve the desired result. I would not doubt that he has literally hundreds of hours in each photo. On top of that, it is obvious that he knows precisely what he wants from his photo, and how to get it (may seem easy, but get Photoshop CS3 and see if you can understand how to use 10% of what it is capable of). What he does is extremely difficult. It may not seem so, and I can understand why you might think that, but trust me, it is brilliant work. Ad that to the fact that the equipment alone to do what he does probably costs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, (in fact, I would love to see the computing power in his shop. He could run NORAD if he needed to) and what you have is someone who deserves praise in my opinion. Adams did similar things in the darkroom to his photos. In fact, it was found that he touched up some very famous works. The black sun being one. Nope, that guy is an artist of the finest quality in terms of using modern photographic techniques.

Thirdly... haven't you ever taken a photo, especially of a landscape, and thought, well, ****, that isn't what it looked like... I think these images capture the almost spiritual aspect of what you see sometimes...with the light streaming down just so in just a certain moment. If you have to fiddle with the image to get to what it was really like...well that's that.

The one I loved so much...of the beach...the reason I loved it, is because, OMG....that's what it's like at twilight, at low tide...with the rivulets making patterns in the almost purple sand.... but I can't take a picture of that...

Also...did you click on the "archived" category on the left? Some great ones there as well, especially the last one in that series!

Lastly...if you had seen these in 32x32...your jaw would have dropped like mine did...

Whew...gotta go make dinner..
On this subject, you are correct nns.

The new username I registered about a month ago is still waiting in the queue to get posting permissions. (Checked it yesterday.)

Not allowing people to join and post during a prime event like the Giro is a death sentence for the forum.

Steve is an asshole. I guess we could send him e-mail instead of a PM, but I doubt it will change anything.
