Is that because of the inexplicable New Year's Eve flu that affects staff in the hospital annually only on that evening, for some bizarre reason?

Wow I feel sorry for you, especially that you feel two days off at Christmas is good. But the hours and your schedule settle down like you said in 2008 when you move into all that diseasy stuff in Pathology.

Yep that's the one ..... a strange virus which seems to strike down individuals rostered to work the evening or night shift - with my luck it will be one of the night shift guys in the ER who won't turn up and I will have the twin pleasures of working on New Year's Eve and dealing with all manner of drunken idiots who have managed to inflict serious injury on themselves.

Hey! Two days off at Christmas is great compared to last year when I worked night shift seven days straight over the Christmas/New Year period - by the end of it I was so sleep deprived it was a miracle I didn't kill somebody.
