I've been watching a bit of 'Raymond' lately coz it's on after Letterman, and man, that is NOT a good show; it's like a sitcom from the 50s!

Frasier and Seinfeld were good obviously. Cheers was good IMO though its a bit dated now when you see reruns. "Young Ones" was good during High School for me. "Not the Nine O'Clock News" was brilliant I thought. That's where Rowan Atkinson got his start. He's in the following short clip/skit from that show which I recommend you watch:

I used to be a pretty big fan of Iron Chef, but now the Food Network only plays their crappy USA version, which always seems to feature the country's biggest jackass chef, Bobby Flay. In fact the Food channel has gone downhill. The only good thing about it is Alton Brown's Good Eats.

The whole of cable TV has really gone to hell in the last five years. The Arts and Entertainment channel shows real estate flipping reality shows, the American Movie Classics channel shows "classics" such as Catwoman, The Learning Channel shows Hollywood movies, The Outdoor Life Network has shown the Jean Claude Van Damme movie Bloodsport, The Sci Fi Channel has professional wrestling, the premium channels hardly ever show movies that are more than ten years old. It is now a wasteland that is just as bad as top 40 radio.

Whoever thought up the idea of reality TV programs needs to be shot.

Talking about TV shows, what was up with Friends? I never understood its popularity. The show was never funny; at most it rose to mildly amusing on the rare ocassion.. The actiing varied from barely adequate (Aniston and Perry) to downright embarassingly bad (Kudrow, Leblanc, Schwimmer). The only thing I can come up with is that people were addicted to the show so they could see what happened to the characters, much like gossip about their own friends, sort of a soap opera effect.

Couldn't agree more about Friends. If it didn't come on after Seinfeld it never would've made it.

Best comedy on now is Curb Your Enthusiasm

I generally don't have a problem with Van Damme movies (I am easily entertained) but, come on, Bloodsport on OLN/Versus? I guess it's not as bad as U-571; I think I saw that being played on the History channel.

The funniest/most ironic/disgusting thing I saw on cable was someone being arrested for not feeding their dog on "Animal Planet - Pet Detectives" then I flipped to OLN and saw a guy shoot a deer with an arrow and only maim it as it ran away, and he's like "Shucks....Looks like I just wasted a good arrow"

One thing I have noticed recently, and when cycling I tend to have a lot of time to think about it, there are a lot of really fugly cars and trucks these days. What's up with that? Have Americans lost any taste (if they ever had any)?

Trends that need to be stopped:

Huge grills. They look pretty stupid on big trucks, but at least one can argue that they are proportional to the vehicle. When put on cars, they look ridiculous. The size of some of these things is comical.

Chrome wheels, huge wheels, and huge, chrome wheels. In the case of huge wheels, the proportion of the vehicle is messed up.. They look stupid. In the case of way too shiny chrome, the wheels look gauche. They are like pinky rings or gold chains with unbuttoned shirts. Flash with no taste.

CUVs. The unholy spawn of a minivan and SUV. Every single one is ugly, really ugly. They look like a vehicle made for those who need a minivan but are too gutless to buy one. The rear visibility must be crap with the huge C pillars and sloped roofs on these things.

I remember checking out the BMW X5 a few years ago. It had the worst 4WD capabilities for any off-road vehicle. But they weren't appealing to people who actually wanted to go off-road (which SUV does anyway?). It drove like an SUV on the road however (crap cornering) and its cabin space was actually less than a 5 series sedan. The only thing I could see attracting people to buy it would be that it was an SUV that was a BMW. And that mums could feel safe driving with their heads a foot and a half higher than in a sedan.

I saw an article in the paper today that some parts of the Southeast were designated in the highest category of severe drought. One of the lakes that serves Atlanta is almost bone dry, but the fisherman are happy because you can almost scoop the fish out of the low water levels with your hands.

I am sorry to hear of your family bereavement. It is something I fear. And I never know what to say.
