He is therefore to be treated as you would a maggot-ridden turd: stay well clear, pretend it doesn't exist, ignore the smell, and hope that none of it rubs off on you.

It is more than that. If Landis would have been smart he could have looked at what happened to Hamilton and played things differently. He should have kept relatively quiet, not making outright denials but questioning the tests. He could have stalled until his lawyers and experts examined the test data. If there were obvious problems then go to the matresses, but if the tests looked good then he should have given a tearful confession and plea for forgiveness.

Of course,, Landis was in a very bad position. His hip made it impossible to know if he would ever race again. He may have thought that the 2006 Tour de France win might be the end of his career and he should do everything possible to save it.
