I was just teasing Cranky. Just a funny one-liner to get a chuckle out of people. Nothing more.

Enjoy it while it lasts...

Don't like the trend though... you've stolen all our ideas and some of our coaches...

We are doing pretty well, I've really enjoyed watchin this time. 12 years makes a lot of difference, remember Atlanta. 1 gold

Also I think that China have put on a really good games, I know.....I know, that anybody who dared **** up would probably get shot, but hey if it makes you put in the effort in . I dread to think what our bunch will do in 2012, when it comes to organising, we are....mmmm.... well ****e.

Bolt will be running down to finishing line in the 100m heats, only to find some fat **** brickie with the obligatory "bike rack" hanging out of his jeans hasn't finished laying the track

I thought that was the Greeks in Athens. You Brits are pretty darn organized as a group... notwithstanding that's a subjective generalization.

The hard act to follow will probably be the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. You'll need to get 15,000 Salvation Army band members doing it pro bono perhaps...

I think the those kind of "opening" and "closing" ceremonies will not be matched in the near future, those were about China saying " we have arrived as a world super power", In the UK in 2012 look for something as impressive as a couple of "bangers" left over from someones back garden firework display.

And yes believe it or not, 1 gold in Atlanta, Redgrave in the rowing

Atlanta might have been your "Enough is enough" moment. Australia's was in Montreal where we had no gold medals and only 5 in total, which was a shock at the time. But it took another 16 years before we started to see some returns from setting up the AIS and a top down government effort.

the sad thing is, Montreal was Canada's "enough is enough" moment too supposedly, when we were the first (and only?) host country in history not to win a gold medal ... things went uphill until about 1988 and steadily downhill from there. Though, I suppose the fact we won a swimming medal for the first time in 8 years and an athletics medal for the first time in 12 years is a start to improving things...

(talking about what events get shown in which country - we get lots of rowing, canoe/kayak because we actually get medals there ... and the men's triathlon live was the highest rated Olympic broadcast so far for CBC)

How do you end up with no gold medals as the host country? Doesn't the host get automatic entry to all sports; they don't have to go through the qualifying process other countries do? You should have had a huge chance of winning something.

The auto entry is one reason the Chinese are doing so well this year.

The UK could celebrate the end of empire. There was never a good blowout for that--aside from that WWII thing.

I was not that impressed with the opening ceremonies. Where did the $300M go? I am much more impressed with the buildings.

you tell me ... I was less than 10 years old at the time and the only thing I remember about the 1976 Olympics was Nadia Comaneci...

Simple - by sucking at everything!! The host gets an automatic entry to team sports but not to individual sports. There also weren't as many qualifying events back then so it was much tougher for a country to get an athelete into an event. So in Canada's case, they got the opportunity to field several more teams they recruited from junior high schools across the nation and instead of sucking at 10 events, they had the chance to suck at 30 events instead!!
