Default Mendrisio elite road race

It should be more exciting (or should I say - unpredictable) than time trial. Battle between Italians and Spaniards is what is expected. I don't have idea how cumulative uphill meters will effect riders like Gilbert or Cancellara (who's aiming high on the home turf). Also, other riders with less support, like Schleck, will be interesting to watch. What escape will they choose, will they wait until last lap?
Has Valverde recovered from Vuelta and does Cunego have what it takes to snatch the Rainbow jersey? How Sanchez will ride?
Spanish squad looks stronger to me (more options for the final lap). Italians will have to control the race, I think.
Valverde, Cunego, Sanchez, Schleck in the first row; then Evans, Cancellara, Gilbert, Bruseghin, Martin, Nuyens and some other, less expected riders. I really hope none of these will take the jersey. It would mean very interesting race.

Thanks for the list. The Italian team looks very strong, and so does the Spanish. My favorites:
*****Cunego, Valverde
****Cancellara, Sanchez
***Boasson Hagen, A. Schleck
**Gilbert, Kroon, Freire, Basso, Ballan
*Scarponi, Boonen, Evans, Gesink, Ivanov

Can a Columbian or a Japanese or an Australian win the Worlds for the first time?

Australia's first Gold medal in the Elite Road Race. I hope that gets rid of some of doubts that people have had about Cadel Evans. He found true grit today.

Fantastic result for Cadel Evans.

Absolutely delighted for the man - after a lot of abuse about never attacking and having been denied a top GC spot in a GT - it's brilliant to see him win.
And he will be defending the title next year, in his home town

Great race today :

Huge round of applause for all the podium presentation : knowledgable crowd know the significance of this result.

A couple of points:

1. Evans has shown you can ride and compete at La Vuelta and still be race ready for the Worlds. Who else has ridden as hard as he has this year?

2. Alexander Kolobnev once again left his more famous team mates eating dust - that's three years in a row he has outperformed the world's best. Is this how good he is when he is not having to follow team orders? The Worlds, the Olympics and now again at the Worlds. Yet with Saxo Bank he is the forgotten man where all the attention is on the Schlecks and Cancellera. Perhaps he would be better offf finding a team with a few less stars?

Very strong showing from Cadel. He attacked in a race where is most difficult to launch successful attack if you don't have support from team mates.
He saved his season.
