Absolutely not, the seasonality of the place means that certain parts - the scottish highlands for example - have hardly any avian predators and thousands of tiny blood sucking insects. The small beetles I mention elsewhere, I came across in the republic of Ireland, and in Northern France - get the season and the time of day right and your car will be covered in a fine layer of insects within an hour. But aphids are the biggest problem. I find that without glasses you can ignore them until your eyes stream so much it ejects them. Crushing them makes things worse. |

The new bandwagon I'm on: I had some wrap-around prescription sunglasses made, with transition lenses. They cost $300, but they eliminate dry eyes from contacts and are great for rides that start or end in darkness (which is important for those of us that leave home at 5:30am to ride bunches.) My myopia is 1.25, I'm not sure how high a prescription they can make in wrap arounds). (FYI, transition lenses become darker as the sunlight increases). The only drawback is you forget that they aren't always dark, and you get can get caught perving much more easily than when you're wearing normal sunnies. |

Better than fitovers, try Cocoons. (www.cocoonseyewear.com). Optically correct lenses, which is vital... really comfortable and 360 degrees of protection... made by a company called Live Eyewear - www.liveeyewear.com |

Just how do those little bug(ger)s learn to find their way straight into the mouth? I tried to keep a stiff upper lip, but that only deflected them into my lower teeth. Is this how you all came to invent balaclavas? Peter Storey |
