Missouri Bicycle Maps online

A variety of maps useful for cross-state bicycling and bicycle route planning have recently been
made available on the Missouri Bicycle Federation's web site:

Available maps include:

* Proposed cross-state bicycle routes (posted for public comment-- read more details below)
* Traffic count maps, showing all 32,000 miles of MoDOT roads across the state with average daily
traffic data
* Shoulder maps, showing all MoDOT roads and indicating which have paved shoulders 4 feet or wider
* Maps of the portion of the Mississippi River Trail in the state of Missouri

Maps can be viewed online, downloaded, and printed. Most maps are in PDF format and are formatted so
that printing them on a typical laserjet or inkjet printer will result in a legible and practically
useful set of map pages.

More about the Proposed Cross-state Bicycle Routes

The Missouri Bicycle Map is (finally) moving forward! The map will show suggested cross-state
bicycle routes and a large number of secondary routes as well as other information helpful to
bicyclists.

The proposed routes have been developed by a subcommittee of MoDOT's Bike/Ped Advisory Committee.
The suggested routes were chosen based on topography and daily traffic counts. But to these we need
to add a good dose of practical cyclist experience and intimate acquaintance with local routes.

That is where you come in! We need comments and suggestions from bicyclists who live in or have
bicycled various areas of Missouri. With 32,000 miles of roads to cover, there is just no way that
one person--or even a small group--can know all these routes intimately.

Comments can be submitted via email or our online feedback form available from the web page.

As currently planned the map will show suggested primary and secondary bicycle routes around the
state and, in addition, a bicycle suitability rating for every (rural) MoDOT road, so that cyclists
can plan their own routes. MoDOT has recently received funding to hire a consultant to develop a
bicycle suitability index that will be appropriate for Missouri's rural highways; the lack of a
workable bicycle suitability measure for rural highways has been a sticking point in creating the
Missouri Bicycle Map.

The Missouri Bicycle Federation is pleased to be able to work with MoDOT and with bicyclists across
the state to help create this useful and much-needed resource for Missouri bicyclists.
