Does anybody know how to identify the year a Hardrock bike was made? I went on their website, but their big advice was to take it to a dealer and maybe, just maybe, one of the guys there will remember it from looking at the color. thanks, Pat in TX |

Got a picture? That's a start. If there is a Specialized dealer near you with good records you might be able to narrow down the date based on their existing records of bikes around that era. I do have the serial number, but it is confusing. This bike is a weird color green with pink Hardrock on the down tube. Well, I shouldn't call it a bike. It is a frame with a rear derailleur. I am considering whether it is worth the trouble to buy parts and build up a bike using this frame, that's all. I have used google and I have written Specialized with no luck. Here is what is written on the bottom bracket: B1 0196SP WBK K M8GN23205 It has Shimano Altus rear derailleur. I am wondering if it was made in 1996, but that's just a guess. Pat in TX |

The Hardrock wasn't a great bike..middle of the road. It's certainly better than a Huffy and I've always liked Specialized bikes (they have nice handling, IMHO, for my type of riding..). But it's not a gem or anything. Cheers, Scott.. |

I am wondering if it was made in 1996, but that's just > a guess. Not a '96 - I'd bet with the color scheme (ugly green and pink), you're looking very early ninties. IIRC, the late 80's stuff was Suntour derailleured. Is the name in script or block print? I think they dropped the script in '93. Is the rear brake by any chance mounted underneath the rear chain stays? That'd put it back in the late 80's Do the tubes join diretly together with a visble weld seam, or do they go into a lug? Hardrock was the intro level bike (ignoring the "Streetjumper" or "Streetsweeper" or whatever that damned thing was). I _might_ put it together out of parts bin stuff or cast-off freebies, but I don't know if I'd put any money into it unless I had to. Hit up all your riding buddies for extra bits and cobble it together... -- Jim |

The direct drive thing was a square (rectangle?) chainstay deal, total marketing!! But I liked the geometry. Not a bad bike..but not great. A beater or commuter I'd say. Cheers, Scott.. |
