Default Dating a specialized bicycle

Does anybody know how to identify the year a Hardrock bike was made? I went on their website, but
their big advice was to take it to a dealer and maybe, just maybe, one of the guys there will
remember it from looking at the color.

thanks,

Pat in TX

Mock away, I think anyone who wants to date their bicycle is out for the wrong sort of ride or
desparate :-Þ

The only surefire way would be a serial number method..but I doubt anyone has that info. Got a
picture? That's a start. If there is a Specialized dealer near you with good records you might be
able to narrow down the date based on their existing records of bikes around that era.

Cheers,

Scott..

I do have the serial number, but it is confusing. This bike is a weird color green with pink
Hardrock on the down tube. Well, I shouldn't call it a bike. It is a frame with a rear derailleur. I
am considering whether it is worth the trouble to buy parts and build up a bike using this frame,
that's all. I have used google and I have written Specialized with no luck.

Here is what is written on the bottom bracket:

B1 0196SP WBK K M8GN23205

It has Shimano Altus rear derailleur. I am wondering if it was made in 1996, but that's
just a guess.

It's been a while, but if you've got green and pink, I'm guessing it was before 1996..more like 1990
or so. The Hardrock wasn't a great bike..middle of the road. It's certainly better than a Huffy and
I've always liked Specialized bikes (they have nice handling, IMHO, for my type of riding..). But
it's not a gem or anything.

Cheers,

Scott..

Not a '96 - I'd bet with the color scheme (ugly green and pink), you're looking very early ninties.
IIRC, the late 80's stuff was Suntour derailleured.

Is the name in script or block print? I think they dropped the script in '93.

Is the rear brake by any chance mounted underneath the rear chain stays? That'd put it back in
the late 80's

Do the tubes join diretly together with a visble weld seam, or do they go into a lug?

Hardrock was the intro level bike (ignoring the "Streetjumper" or "Streetsweeper" or whatever that
damned thing was). I _might_ put it together out of parts bin stuff or cast-off freebies, but I
don't know if I'd put any money into it unless I had to.

Hit up all your riding buddies for extra bits and cobble it together...

It's also a vehicle operated by the city to get the sand out of the bike lanes on a road <GGG>.

block print that is pink and has shadings in it like fine lines

No, it's a cantilever brake.

No lugs

and on the chain stay it has the words "direct drive"

That's just a legend. Like the sasquatch...no sightings have been proven.

Yeah, that sounds early 90's to me. The direct drive thing was a square (rectangle?) chainstay
deal, total marketing!! But I liked the geometry. Not a bad bike..but not great. A beater or
commuter I'd say.

Cheers,

Scott..
