Default Lance photo in SI

The current issue of Sports Illustrated (former NFL player
who got killed in Afghanistan on the cover) has a full-
spread photo of Lance taken during the TT stage of the Tour
de Georgia. It's an awesome photo. Lance looks as lean and
mean as I've ever seen him in any photo.

Ah, nothing like reading my daily dose of wishful thinking
from the ever rabid anti-Lance camp. I can hardly wait
until the end of July so I can rub your nose in it for yet
another year.

And, hopefully someone will talk some sense into him so
he'll come back in 2005 and get #7, pretty much putting the
record out of reach for eternity.

I said it was a full-page spread ... not a centerfold.

Thanks for the heads-up. I rarely get the rag, but will
give it a scan next time I'm in the book shoppe for my
cycling mag fix.

???

Records, like rules were made to be broken. If Lance does
get 7, someone will eventually break it. Besides, even if he
does win 7 in a row, it won't make him the Greatest Cyclist
Ever (TM), so who cares?

It would stand until bio-engineered gene-spliced mutants
make all sporting events moot.

No way LANCE HATER! He is already the GREATEST ever! Just
wait, once he hits 7 Tours, he will start doing Giro Vuelta
doubles during the same seasons that he breaks the rest of
the records (for eternity)!

Here's my thinking on 6 or 7: If Lance does it, well, wow!
It'll be awesome. However, looking back on the
specialization of tour victors, 25 of the past 47 Tours have
been won by only 5 riders. It's exciting to see a new
challenger win the race. It's exciting to see a the same
rider defend. At some point if the reigning champion closes
in on an illustrius record, which can be exciting (the 2003
Tour certainly met that test for whatever reasons.) Consider
being a fan, though of Belgian, French, Spanish, Italian,
German, or other countries cycling. It's an amazing feat to
you, but it probably gets a bit monotonous watching the same
rider win. Consider how monotonous it would be to see in a
few years time another incredible talent arrive and win 7 or
8 tours. It's certainly a possibility.

While I think it would be great for Lance to win a 6th Tour,
I do feel the reduced turnover of Tour champions has
increased the emphasis on the other classifications (KOM,
Points) and stage victories. Seeing another Eddy Merckx
arrive would undoubtably be exciting for the first couple
years, but after that, it would probably be less
interesting.

Lastly, what Greg did for drumming up more than die-hard
cycling fan interest in the USA, Lance has extended. How
would the general US attention span for things cycling
related survive the next non-US dominator?

As for booing Lance for being so successful, not me, I'd
love to see
#6 for a variety of rationale, but I wonder about those who
#do want to
see Lance lose for being too successful.
