FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Brooke Kuhn Elizabeth Jasper President Marketing Consultant Bay Area Women's Cycling 415.221.3991 415.648.4998 ejasper@mindspring.com BAWcycling@hotmail.com www.BAWcycling.com BAY AREA WOMEN'S CYCLING ANNOUNCES ITS 2003 WOMEN'S CYCLING CLINIC ON APRIL 19 AND APRIL 20 Clinic Kicks Off Northern California Women's Category 3 and 4 Road Bicycling Racing Series March 31, 2003, San Francisco, CA—Bay Area Women's Cycling (BAWC) announced its third annual Bay Area Women's Cycling Clinic on Saturday and Sunday April 19 and April 20. The 2003 Northern California Women's Category 3 and 4 Road Bicycle Racing Series kicks off the following weekend, Saturday April 26, with the Wente Road Race in Livermore. The clinic and series are organized by Brooke Kuhn, president of Bay Area Women's Cycling and a category 3 competitive cyclist herself. "Last year's clinic and race series were an amazing experience for me, but more importantly for the women who participated," says Kuhn. "Sixty women signed up for the clinic last year, and we saw the number of women racing competitively jump 93% from 2001 to 2002. Though it's still really early in the race season, Casey Kerrigan, vice president of the Northern California Nevada Cycling Association, told me that the category 4 women's field in the Snelling Road Race (February 22, 416) outnumbered the category 4 men in a race for the first time he can ever remember." The Bay Area Women's Cycling Clinic on Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20, helps women and teenagers at the beginner and intermediate levels of racing or endurance riding to learn and improve racing strategy and bicycle handling skills. The clinic will be taught by Bay Area professional cyclist, Nicole Freedman, a two-time U.S. National Champion and former member of the U.S Olympic Road Team. The Racing Series is based on points earned for participation and placement in each of its races, with prizes awarded to the top 10 finishers after the 5th as well as final races. All of the races on the 2003 schedule have separate races and or standings for Categories 3 and 4 riders. Founded by Brooke Kuhn in 2001, BAWC's mission is improving the health and well-being of women and girls in the Bay Area through physical fitness. Specifically, BAWC encourages women and girls to ride bicycles, improve their cycling, and participate in bicycle races. To fulfill its mission, BAWC has built a women's cycling community throughout the Bay Area with monthly rides hosted by a variety of women's groups and cycling clubs. For more information, visit www.BAWcycling.com, email BAWcycling@hotmail.com or call 415.648.4998. The following sponsors have generously donated to the Cycling Clinic and the Racing Series: Northern California Nevada Cycling Association, Rudy Project, Accelerade, Pinnacle/Gorilla Sports/Bally Fitness, Clif Bar, Galaxy Granola, Sheila Moon, DeFeet, Cateye, Fuji, Cannondale, Trico Sports, Selle Italia and Cytomax. Information for both the Clinic and the Series follows. --x x x-- As a woman bike racer, you've experienced: · How difficult it is to race when all the categories are lumped together, · How hard it is to measure progress when you don't get a chance to race against many competitors, · How promoters are reluctant to separate women's race categories when field sizes are so small. That's why there's a race series to help address these issues!
