Default Bicycle racing: Zurich

Once again, we interrupt your regularly scheduled Lance, EPO and masters racing threads - tommorow
is the date of the world cup race in Zurich.

Anyone think Bettini will make it three in a row?

How dare you!

Does the parcours suit him? I couldn't locate a course description.

I think it will be difficult for him, at least to win. The more he wins, the less willing his
competitors will be to cooperate in a breakaway. OTOH, he can win a sprint out of a medium sized
group, so who knows?

Too bad Bettini can't count on VdB Doggy Dogg at his best. That'd be a hell of a 1-2 punch for
QuickStep.

As an aside, has anyone noticed that BMC Software is the sponsor of the race? They've dumped a lot
of $$$ into sponsoring cycling.

Yes. He won in 2001 and last year was second (to Frigo, who had attacked on the last hill to sail in
solo by a minute, i.e., Bettini won a small group sprint. Oddly, Armstrong came past everyone else
in the small group to take third.)

Ullrich took 2nd in 2000 and 2001.

yea hilly. One long loop 70 km I think and then 3-4 short 40 km loops with a selector climb near the
end of the loop. course descrtiption at cyclingnews. He can count on help from VirenQ unless they
decide to race for Richard... Watch Jan since he's thinking about ending his season here to be home
with the family.. Finally Dani Di Luca is do...

He surely can, but I don't think he will. Hamilton is going to win this one.

For the profile (over 3000 m of climbing):

an for the course:

http://www.zuerimetzgete.de/elite/strecke.htm

It does suit Bettini. He won on the same course in front of Ullrich. The first ascent to Forch
(where I will be tomorrow) is not very steep (about 270 m altitude gain, done 5 times). Then the
harder ascent to the Pfannenstiel, but less altitude gain. The last climb in the round course is
rather steep, but only rather short (I will be there as well, it is perhaps 5 km from Forch, and one
can do it conveniently on the bike, while the pros go 20 km). After that a decent to the lake, and a
very flat course until the finish line.

I think, he will have a good chance. But certainly, his opponents are aware of his form, and
will not make it easy for him. I think almost everybody that can be considered as a potential
winner will suspect, that he will lose against Bettini, when they arrive in Zürich after the
last round together.
