Default Northern California, Klamath River Highway 96

Hi;

From my road map, it looks like the Klamath River has a relatively mild slope between the west and
east ends of Highway 96, but as you know, river roads can have extremely steep hills even though it
follows a level river.

Has anyone ridden Highway 96, or any portion of it between Weitchpec and its eastern end at
Interstate 5?

Are there any hills of more than a few hundred feet climb?

How about the pavement, shoulder, and vehicle traffic?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Although I've never biked that route, I'v driven it many times. Some rollers but mainly just winds
along the river. As I recall, biggest hill is as you pass Happy Camp. Road generally wide lanes with
decent shoulders. Some traffic not heavy, maybe some logging trucks. Several campgrounds enroute.
How do you happen to start at Weitchpec??? Although you didn't indicate time of year, I think a much
more interesting route (weather permitting) would be to head east at Somes Bar, then left at Forks
of Salmon and up over the 5958 foot Etna summit (good road - almost no traffic), down to Etna
(lovely little town), then follow the Scott River to regain 96 just east of Hamburg and continue on
to I-5 from there. Email me for more info about that route if interested. See AAA map: Northwestern
California. Road from Happy Camp to O'Brien (in Oregon) would make a fine ride, although you're
starting and ending in the middle of nowhere.

I use DeLorme's Topo software to address such questions, an invaluable resource for
touring cyclists.

Wesley:

CalTrans regions 1 & 2 make surprisingly decent bike touring maps. And they send them to you at no
change. District 1 (Humboldt & Del Norte
Co) ph 707-445-6444. Dist 2 (Siskiyou, Trinity, Shasta, Tehama, Modoc, Lassen & Plumas Co) ph
916-225-3489. Good luck.

Hello Fellow Cyclists!

I would like to thank all of you for your very helpful replies.

My wife and I are always looking for good places to tour on our tandem. We live in San Jose.
There are lots of excellent rides in the Bay Area, but sometimes you just have to get out into
the country!

We plan to make several rides in Nor Cal during Thanksgiving week. Yes, it could be a little chilly
and rainy, but that doesn't stop us!

The south end of Hwy 96 is closer to San Jose. Plus, by riding "upstream" along the Klamath River,
it should be downhill on the way back. At least that's the theory.

It's been too long since I've been in that area to post useful first-hand info, but I did fire up my
Topo! software and was able to confirm that Steve knows what he is talking about.

The only significant elevation change I could find was a 500' foot climb just upriver of Happy Camp.

The District 2 Cycling Guide is available online at:

Sorry, I don't have a handy link for District 1.
