> We are going to Europe in the Spring. Where can we obtain inexpensive cycle route maps ?? That's never what you want in any country in Europe. The gov't general purpose maps are always better, ie the local equivalent of USGS maps in the US. Here in Britain that's Ordnance Survey Maps, in France its Institute Geographique National, and so on. I think that you can buy most of them through Adventure Cycling, see <www.adventurecycling.org> but they will be much cheaper bought locally. Adventure Cycling ought to give you details for the maps of all the major countries. Maps are generally widely aailable in bookshops, newstands, and so on. Keep the maps afterwards as souveniers, but mail them back home to save weight as soon as you have finished with them. Maps in Europe are much better than in the US. There will be private competitors to the gov't maps, for example the famous Michelin maps in France. Here in Britain the major OS map series useful for cyclists are published at scales of 1:50 000, and 1:250 000. Good value is the Motorist's Road atlas: the whole country in one book with scale 3 miles to the inch, actually the 1:250 000 maps blown up to a larger size. You can tear out the pages you need to save weight Hope this helps Jeremy Parker London UK |
