- Andrew Heckman http://webpages.charter.net/200a/AndrewHeckman2.htm, the man who nearly gave his life for the National Bicycle Greenway last summer on a stormy night in rural Illinois, informs us that he hopes to be able to make it down for the second annual Santa Cruz NBG Bike Fest on August 17!! He and his wife Lisa not only finally got married a few months ago but soon after they did, they moved back to Portland, OR where it is far easier for both of them to remain Car Free!! Unable to walk more than a few blocks without great pain, Andrew loves all the mass transit and the closeness of all the services and entertainment he finds there. And if you can believe it, as he resurrects his small company, Bellwether Communications http://bellwethercomm.net, he has even offered to help us flesh out our proclamation cities with information that you've seen me ask in here before about where to ride, eat, sleep and play once our cyclists get there. WoW. Is this man not bionic? Does his heart not bleed his need to give to live?? And many of us will actually get to meet this legend at the Mayor's Ride destination city, Santa Cruz!! - Speaking of Portland and Monolithic Men and the name Andrew for that matter, we've been hearing a lot from Andrew Morton http://www.PocketMail.com/?loc=us&sec=community&pg=morton again. Andrew Morton who collected proclamations from eight mayors on his ride for us from Portland to Santa Cruz last summer http://www.bikeroute.com/NatRelayRide2002.html moved to Portland to go to the university there and is working with Jody Fitch, Roan Bear, Jim Redd, Don Fong, Steve Almeroth, Faye Saunders, myself and others as we expand the membership building capacity and knowledge base of the all new NationalBicycleGreenway.com. And even here Andrew's contributions are epic. He's even building a web that will automatically turn our riders road reports into a web page that everyone can see, in real time!! - Spearheaded by Jody Fitch, the web project above also finds the amazing Jim Redd http://www.bikeroute.com/SCNBGFest/DMoinesRecep.html also smack dab in the middle. Having just returned from a tour of the Pacific Coast, Jim tells us that he will, in his words, "commit 12-16 hours a week to (our) project". Whoaa, I mean look what this man has done for the Chicago Critical Mass http://www.chicagocriticalmass.org/. Talk about giving an effort credibility.... - Another epic force is following the lead Jim Redd also set in making the Chicago to Des Moines relay link a much celebrated one indeed. Jeff Reeser is not only researching this route and has already begun training for it, but he is so excited about his ride that he's managed to get this brother Jason, a bike shop owner, to join him come May 30 when their ride begins. And as testimony to the purity of their intention, of seeing the reality of our National Bicycle Greenway come true, Jason wants just to do the ride. He doesn't want anyone to think he is doing this so that his shop can get publicity. Maybe we can convince him that he will have earned such a right!! - Jeff Reser even offered 60 dollars to help kick of a fund raiser for Andrew Heckman who has been able to defer his giant medical bills until his attorneys work a settlement. In the interim, however,Andrew and Lisa have had to sell all their bikes to keep the lawyers moving forward and to pay for their move as well as Andrew's pain medications. Jeff had thought that we could make Chicago to Des Moines a pledge ride for Andrew. Anyone interested in spearheading this effort? Too powerful!! - Bicycles by Haluzak http://www.Haluzak.com has just established a Santa Rosa to Napa spur for our Mayor's Ride. A 42 mile distance, this link could prove to be one of the most beautiful rides of the whole relay summer as it passes thru many miles of gently rolling vineyards. In Santa Rosa itself, a city the famous horticulturist Luther Burbank once described as the "chosen spot of all the earth", Bill Haluzak is very active with the Santa Rosa Bike Coalition. So not only will this be a great ride but there will likely be a lot of cyclists riding it!! Yahoo Bill!! - Many of you saw the Third World SUV http://www.bikeroute.com/EnviroFacts.htm that I sent out yesterday. In response, Ron Swenson sent me one that he found: http://www.energycrisis.com/transport _ Fasten your seat belts folks, we're only starting to hit our stride!! -- M A R T I N K R I E G : "Awake Again" Author Bent Since '83, Car Free Since '89, Attacking with Love Coma, Paralysis, Clinical Death Survivor '79 & '86 TransAm Vet - Invites you to: http://www.BikeRoute.com/SCNBGFest N A T I O N A L B I C Y C L E G R E E N W A Y |
