Default Dura Ace 10-speed wheel interchange

Rusty is riding Dura Ace 10-speed. In races he's using
Reynolds wheels, while for training he's using an Ultegra
hub wheel. These two wheels require a radical adjustment in
the derailleur after interchange in order to get smooth
shifting. His last race, adjusted for the Reynolds, he had
to take a neutral wheel which shifted fine; this seems to
say that the older Ultegra wheel is the "odd man out."

Anyone have any idea what's going on here and how
to correct it? I 'd like to get him set up with
some heavy duty interchangeable wheels for Ecology
Pintler
[http://www.ecologycenterclassic.org/pintler.htm]
where, last year, we had 23+ punctures in the
pro/I/II and had to cut the race by a lap because
we ran out of wheels.

Pete

You need to play with spacers between the right cone and
its locknut.

If you need to loosen the cable to fix the indexing, adding
thin spacers will correct it, and conversely.

There are 0.1 mm shim washers that will work for this,
commonly used for chainring bolts but they will also match
up with a standard 10 mm axle.

I'll have to play with this. The "bad" wheel uses a
spacer and I'm not sure about the "good" wheels. Thanks
for the input

In my experience your observation is right: that Ultegra is
slightly different from Dura-Ace (and many high-end
aftermarket hubs). I think Ultegra is slightly wider.

I'd recommend carefully measuring a Dura-Ace and matching
all his wheels to that. From memory here (so it's probably
wrong!) the Dura-Ace hubs I've measured are around 40.5 +/-
0.2mm from the dropout to the cassette stop.

Why not get a 10 speed cassette for the other wheel?

They are expensive, however, you are prematurely wearing the
chain out, and DA10 chains are not super durable to begin
with. Once the chain is worn its only a matter of time
before the DA10 cassette gets eaten as well.

Why not indeed?

Kinda answered your own question there, Jay.

PS Please don't top-post.
