Default Look replacement bearings (axles?)

i have a set of pp256's, circa 1994 (blue-colored 'carbon' fiberglas bodies). they have developed
significant play in the bearings and are due for an overhaul. in the little research i've done it
seems that these pedals are known for premature bearing problems.

opinions are many...

one LBS says 'hang 'em on your christmas tree', as look has changed bearing design since '94 and
replacement parts are no longer available.

another LBS say the bearings can only be had as an assembly with the spindle, at $25-$30 per pedal.

a third says they can be disassembled and rebuilt.

can anyone confirm/deny/add to this list? better yet, can anyone provide a source for the parts.

thx,
