A friend gave me a bunch of Campy parts. A friend gave them to him. They are all in Campagnolo 9spd Record boxes, but a few things about the parts don't match the boxes. Can you tell me what these things are? http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/imag...mystery_campy/ I see some dual-pivot Chorus brakes. Do they match thge rest of the parts, or are there other Campagnolo parts mixed in here? Thanks, Morgan |

Well, the cranks look like the mid 80's(?) Record cranks I just got. I don't know much about the older stuff, so maybe the other grades look the same, but I do know, according to Branford Bike, that that 7mm crankbolt was not too successful(for whatever reason), and they didn't stay in production too long. |

The crank, ergos and changer are older (pre '98), the calipers are newish. Can't see the BBs well enough but one is expensive (thin body) and one isn't (fat body). Do your silver boxes have a year sticker on them? 1998? 99? 2K? That's when these were boxed, probably. Around here, the stuff we rebox after a nine or ten speed conversion usually as a lot of life left in it. You can get a nine speed insert for those levers if they are eight. (check that) Generally it is not worth building an eight bike - nine is not much more $ but is better supported. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |

I've checked with the 2000 - 2002 catalogues (unfortunately I don't have any earlier ones). ~PB |

The actual parts are cheap--and potentially hazardous--knock-offs, most likely made by Bulgarian political prisoners during a sad period in that nation's history. It was a scam to make money for the ruling party, but the workers often inserted hidden flaws into the mock-Campy parts as a protest to their exploitation, and to express their inner artistic feelings. Now, a copy of a Gucci handbag is one thing. A so-called Campagnolo hub that disintegrates into a hundred shards leaving only a phoenix rising from the ashes of political-prisonerhood, now, that could hurt. Send me the parts, and I will dispose of them properly. Brian Plaugher |

Altho not a great design in that the 7mm stripped sometimes, keeping it for 10 years doesn't a 'unsuccessful' design make. Boxes all say "9spd Record", but I don't think they go with the parts. Any way to tell which gruppo these are? If you click the thumbnails you should get a 1200x900 image. I can take higher-res pics if it helps... Morgan |
