Default Bashguard ID...

Would anyone happen to know if

http://www.raceface.com/components/components.php?id=18

this bashguard will protect a 34T chainring?

Dear Phil,

Their fine print says that there are three sizes:

SIZE: Compact, Standard and 4 bolt

Their FAQ says:

Q: What is the difference between Compact and Standard?

R: Standard and Compact refers to the bolt spacing of your cranks. Standard is a 110mm outer, 74mm
inner bolt pattern. This spacing enables the rider to typically use larger chain-rings, ie; 26
tooth granny rings,36 tooth mid-rings and 46-48 tooth outer-rings. These gear sizes are usually
found on downhill bikes or mountain bikes that spend respectable amounts of time on the road as
well as off. Compact spacing, 94mm outer and 58mm inner, allows the rider to use smaller
chain-rings. For example, 20-22 tooth granny rings, 30-34 tooth mid-rings and 42-44 outer rings.
These gear ratios are more commonly found on cross-country and free-ride type bikes, allowing
for lower speed torque and spinning.

I say it would be nice if they answered your obvious question clearly on the bash-guard page. It
sorta-kinda looks like "compact" handles 34t as mid-rings, but the dimensions would help.

Since they don't sell to the public, you'll have to get it from a dealer anyway, who probably can
answer the question right away and take it back when it doesn't fit.

Hope someone who actually owns one with a 34t offers better help.

Good luck,

Thanks for the info, but the main question I was asking is if the guard will cover up to 34T and not
just 32T. I'm dealing on eBay and the bashguard in question is pictorially identical to the one in
my previous link.

I'm at home for thanksgiving, and don't have my bike with me. However, since the cranks are stock, I
found through the Giant website that my middle ring is indeed a 32T so I have nothing to worry
about. Thanks though.

The bash guard might be for a outer ring .I had one called a toothfairy I would protect a 44 tooth
outer ring. Some bash rings replace the outer ring .to protect the smaller middle ring .These are
more of a freeride thing .Most XC riders keep there big ring and just protect it .
