Default Performance Bicycle SUX?

Hello, I don't want to ***** too much but has anyone else had problems with Performance Bicycle
catalog orders. I ordered from them in mid October and one item was "out of stock" at the time. Said
that it would be back in stock and then ship in November. Three weeks later it was restocked and
sent to me BUT then 2 1/2 weeks later I still don't have it. Well, my REAL problems started when I
tried to talk with someone at Performance. I have been put off, had excuses and explainations told
to me, was promised a call back from someone in management who never called. back and just generally
treated like a BOOB for complaining. Are they having business problems? Order problems, vendor
problems or ......Possibly heading toward putting up the "Out of Business" sign?

Funny thing is, I just got some catalogs the other day from Bike Nashbar and Super Go Bike shop -
are they any better to deal with?

I think your experience is the exception, and not the rule. I had an experience along the lines of what you had, with Nashbar, and said I'd never use them again. About 8 months later I was back! (Price + 20% discount was just too atractive).

Like someone else responded, Nashbar is owned by Performance, though the operations seem to be
completely separate. I've never bought from Performance Bike, but I've had good luck with Nashbar.
Of course there are a few horror stories about their customer service as well, just like any
catalog merchant.

Both Nashbar and SuperGo are owned by Performance.

Are there no bike shops in your area?

That's your real problem...find a nice LBS and you'll never have these problems.

Nope. Performance has always provided exemplary service. I've ordered from them since the 80s and
have never had a problem. Top notch organization....

Hello Everyone, Thanks for your wit, wisdom and advice on the subject of Performance Bike shop.
Since I do live in the metro Detroit, Michigan area, I will spend more time shopping the local bike
stores and keeping my hard earned money here in the WWW - Winter, Water Wonderland :-)

I'm a Team Performance member! Woohoo! Actually, with all my purchases this year, I have saved a
bundle. I have never had a problem with any mail order company unless you consider "temporarily out
of stock" as a problem. Then I have had a problem with every mail order company including Colorado
Cyclist, Supergo (even when it was Bikeology in the 70s and 80s -- and about the only mail order
game in town), Nashbar and Performance.

We have a Performance store here in PDX (actually nearby Beaverton), and it is full of dumb
youngsters spouting misinformation, but hey, the tubes and tires are cheap. Other things are cheap,
too, if they are in stock (rarely). -- Jay Beattie.

Thanks Chris, you are right about the local bike shops. Better to pay a little more and save on the
shipping AND the totally clueless people who work and own the catalog stores.

Frequent complaint of those who work in the shops nearby, they _don't_ order, they simply stock what
comes in. Corp. HQ determines what the shop needs and sends it to them. It's pretty freaky and I've
been disappointed more than a couple times because they didn't have something common in stock and
couldn't do anything to get it, other than direct me to Performance online. Guess the beancounters
are worried that the people in the shops might order lots of crap the never sells.

Please tell me you're kidding, right? Being as Performance sells the products that are discussed
daily in rbtech, it is only fitting that their reputation as a dealer of said products is also
discussed.

Dear Jay,

Mi hermano! I like the illusion that I'm saving money, too, with my Team Performance membership, but
I just buy more bike stuff from them with it, which is their evil scheme. The shipping upgrade is
nice, too.

Like Nashbar, Performance answers the phone, ships what they have in stock, apologizes for what's
out of stock, sends me catalogues galore, and has been nice when I called back and said never-mind
or else oops-I-ordered-the-wrong-part.

I tend to order by phone because I found that what the web site says is in stock is sometimes out of
date compared to what a live clerk sees on the company screen.

The web site and 800 number are awfully nice for anyone like me whose bicycle shopping urges often
strike during a vampire's feeding time.

The good news is that by taking all your business to your friendly neighborhood bike dealer, you can
often get discounts at least as good as those offered by mail-order shops.

Make yourself a familiar face around the shop. Be the kind of customer who is a pleasure to deal
with, extend favors to owner and employees if you can, and always pay the asking price cheerfully
(because paying full price at an LBS is for a worthy cause). Next thing you know, you won't be
paying the price on the sticker.

You can ask for a discount when you think the time is ripe for one, but I have never had to ask for
one at "my" bike shop.
