Default Changing Gear

Got a problem with shifting gears.

Whatever gear I am in it always shifts to the next one down. So that first is secon second is third and so on.

I h have decided that I should learn to maintain my bike so any ideas how I fix this.

I assume its simple but prob best to get advise rather than just fiddle.

By the way how often should I clean the bikejavascript:smilie('')

If you received an owner's manual with your bicycle, you can consult it for cleaning and adjusting.
