Hello Everyone. A while back I posted, and got into some "newbie" tips on running. I just ran my first 10K this summer (a month back) - and just did it again this weekend. Before this year I was barley able to run 4K on my best day, now I found the 10 quite enjoyable... your advice was great. Esp the advice about slowing down and starting up... one thing I also found that helped was a watch monitoring my heart. kept me in line. Anyhow, I'm about to try and pull off the next thing, a 1/2 marathon in September... I was wondering: 1. I weigh 220lb, don't smoke. 2. Just started longer distance running this year (jogged for years but short distances). 3. so I'm doubling the distance Is this a double goal, or should I just give it a year or two? If doable, any good advice for this one? Thanks again everyone Richard |

If doable, any good advice for this one? It's doable. Keep up the good work, try to steadily increase the length of your long runs. You'll want to build up to a 9-10 mile run in training to be in decent shape to get through the half. Do a long run every week if you're running 5x/week or more, every other week if you're running less frequently. If you add 1 mile to each long run, you'll be running your first 10 miler in 8 weeks, even if you nly go long every other week. Cheers, -- Donovan Rebbechi http://pegasus.rutgers.edu/~elflord/ |

If you've already run a 10K then you can increase your long run gradually. According to Hal, and others, the longest you need to run pre-race is 16K (10 miles). This worked fine for me on my 1st 1/2M. Good luck. Anthony. |

Treat it as if you are in Rocky I, plan to just "go the distance". The half is where endurance really becomes an issue. Enjoy your first half marathon. I predict you crash at mile 3 and quit, crying like a baby in a soiled diaper (for good reason, you're wearing a Depends) because of an ankle injury from your nikes. |

Will it effect his endurance? Will he run funny that day? |
