Default Help me rec.runners, help me.

My knee hurts. Just........here.......and......here. See? Now, what can be done about it?

My friendly physio tells me that my rectus femoris is unhappy, especially around the tendon of the
quadriceps femoris. Even I'd worked that out, but why, it's so unhappy I can't imagine. We've always
been on fairly good terms. Seems is didn't approve of the 62k's in one go. I've explained I won't do
it again, but to no avail. Anyone had anything similar? Know of treatments that worked (that don't
involve a break from running)?

Roger, I've seen this before. Just stretch. That fixes almost anything.

Does it hurt when you do ....this, ....and then..... this? How about if I prod it ..... there?

Hold it a bit closer to your monitor next time, I couldn't get a clear view last time.

> My friendly physio tells me that my rectus femoris is unhappy,

Ah well, that'll be it then, your femoris is rectus.

Take a holiday and leave your NBs at home.

Um, no. Hope this helps. ;-)

Roger, one thing at which you are certainly consistent is being enigmatic.

You used to show so much promise, but now you've been reduced to "my knee hurts" posts. It's like
watching someone drown, and there's nothing you can do.

A little more familiar than I'd like to be (from athletes I coach). Rectus femoris injuries are
quite common in sprinters doing block starts. Strains in the rectus come from explosive activities
(although more commonly toward the hip). Quadriceps femoris is normally a victim of too much
downhill, so I'd guess that you got this by doing too much downhill either too fast or striking
something sharply too often.

If the injured muscle IS the rectus, the best treatment (besides rest) is heat. Jump in a spa or
whirlpool frequently and take some ibuprofen. Wear a thigh support that retains heat, which you
can see here:

http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cy...rontthigh/thig hsupport.htm

You can cycle for exercise with a rectus injury, but you have to avoid any type of explosive or
sharp impact. The pole vault wouldn't be highly recommended. If you are going to run, find the
softest surface available and do NOT run downhill. The best place would be a treadmill in a gym.

Cut off your arm and count the rings. When the number gets near 50 what usedta be just fine now
barks. Ain't life fun?

Are you bragging about doing 62k or admitting it may not have been a bright move?

Just keep running through it. You'll look good in a wrap around walking cane. So what did your
physio say to do besides restor cut way back, ice and/or heat, stretch and maybe an NSAID or two?

There's always the chance one of you idiots has stumbled across the cure. If you have, I shall write
a paper and claim it as my own.

I understand what you're saying. You don't know HOW humiliating it was to post this request.

I never read any of your posts 'cause I hated the name 'Lyndon', and to my simple mind no-one having
a daft name could ever talk sense. However, I was wrong. You speak many truths, young Lyndon. I like
your advice - a lot more positive than my physio - especially the bit where I continue to run. I
shall gulp large quantities of ibuprofen, run gently on grass, and haul out the mountain bike from
under the stairs. We shall see if you can cure a doctor...

I realised this several years ago. My main aim now is to stay healthy and injury-free. However,
large parts of my brain have yet to get this message, hence the silly runs...

> Are you bragging about doing 62k or admitting it may not have been a bright move?

I've already bragged. Now I realise it was far from bright, especially as I ran the last 8k in a
little pain. Ah well, if I were perfect what would you do for laughs?

That was about it. They're bloody useless. Hell, I could have told myself that. I expect a cure that
incorporates a daily run, and I'll damn well find one. I'm on Lyndon's plan until it kills or cures.

Then I will follow my advice with the ever-popular retort, "well, you must not be stretching the
right way".

I can now claim that my knee-jerk stretching advice was right, and that it was just the
implementation that was wrong.

Art (Needless to say, not a big stretcher. Okay, needful to say.)
