Chris, it's a bit of a story...
That Twike is on loan from a couple in the U.S. Readers of the IHPVA
list may recall some postings a few years back from a couple that had
tried to bring a Twike into the States, but it was held up a Customs for
lack of proper paperwork. They were being charged daily storage fees for
something like a year while trying to get things sorted out, and my
friend Juergen (the guy who helped me build my trike) emailed them to
see what their plans were.
Juergen is with EVCO (Electric Vehicle Council of Ottawa -
http://www.twike.ca/ ) and asked to "borrow" the Twike. Arrangements
were made to have it brought in by the Museum of Science and Technology
under special permit. It can be used in parades, displays, and on
closed courses, but is not allowed out general traffic (it has to be
trailered). Juergen also created a website -
http://www.twike.ca/
We have the same problem as in the States - the Twike falls into a gray
area of vehicle definition, which makes government transport officials
rather nervous. EVCO is working with the federal ministry of transport
to legalize new definitions for hybrid vehicles, because as it stands
right now it has to come under bike, moped, or car. Currently if you
have an el. assist vehicle that goes 50 km/h it would be illegal here.
