I lived for 11 years in northern california and have biked throughout the whole area. Tahoe is OUT for cycling in winter. There will be 10 feet of snow there. Yosemite/Kings/etc will also be too unreliable. Napa is beautiful but will be cold (30s) in the morning and generally hit or miss with weather. You could get 7 days of sun, or you could get 7 days of rain (and I mean steady rain). I actually like the riding on the peninsula better anyway, but there's the same weather concern there. There must be somewhere with more reliable weather in winter?

Yeah fall in the Smokies is nice for color, but as I'm sure you know, it can be cold and wet, and the OP did say winter. I'll be there next weekend on the club's semi-annual campout in Natahala NF, near Robbinsville. We do a 62 mile loop thru town, climb up Stecoah Gap, around Fontana Lake and then return through the "world famous" Deale's Gap moto stop. On nice fall Saturday's, it's packed with dozens of racer wanna-be's who come out to scare themselves on the twisty section of US 129 called "Tail of the Dragon".

All things considered, I'm sticking with Tucson as the best place in the US for winter cycling.

I was kind of boring of the same roads and I wanted a little more adventure, so when my family and I went on a peru tour I wasn't that exited 'till I found they had a cycling program it was awesome!
It really was!

I know there are many great places to ride but I am very partial to Cali and Hawaii. I would highly recommend Kona, Hawaii and the Bay Area of California... especially Marin County. These are incredibly beautiful places with amazing views, great roads and great trails. Kona is much more for road riding but there are plenty of places to get dirty on a mountain bike as well. Also... there is plenty to see and do when you are off the bicycle

These are interesting cycle tour maps and pictures to play with.
Not too many in the USA but once you find the links it is ok.

Sometime this winter, I am taking a 1 week vacation. My plan is to purchase a nice bike luggage, and take a flight somewhere for a week and just ride.

My question to you is, where is the nicest area/region/state, to do some good riding ?

I would prefer to stay within the US (money-wise), and maybe find some nice elevations and scenery. Any suggestions or experiences would be great.

Thanks,
-Greg

One of my best friends lives outside Auckland, NZed. He sends me piccies of rides, .kmz files of rides all too often. It's beautiful down there. Once enough is put away, NZed will be my family's next vacation destination........a couple weeks of cycling.......some climbing in the NZed Alps.....

Well it is all here and not the biomic monotony of the larger continental landmasses.
It is Springtime now but still cold, kinda half cold half ..
"it's not day or night. It's kinda half night, you know?..."
Denny's Cafe [winkies]
Mulholland Drive

Some really hot days now, but it is a temperate climate and can rain at times.
South Island of NZ best deal for scenery.

I don't mind rain, and I definitely want to play on the steep bits of the mountains on the South Island.

Friend is on me about coming in August, so that I can also catch the World's in Geelong, NotNZed.

Well forget about playing the glaciers have to be treated with respect.
An experienced guide was crushed recently. The unexpected can happen.
Keep your wits about you at all times in the National Parks and don't go off the main trails without letting someone know where you are. Cells don't always work.( :

I know. Climbing is a gig of mine, so I'm aware of the surprises that the mountains can offer. Having once, in Canada, stepped through a snow bridge over a crevasse, I know that my butt can clinch up at lightning speed. The Canadian Rockies don't look too dissimilar to the NZ Alps, and are glaciated as well.

I sure as hell will bring one....and more. There's nothing better than being high, on a peak, and not a soul in sight. That's where true peace is found. Once, a climbing partner and I were sitting on tiny little ledges we'd carved out of ice, on a 60° slope, about one meter back from the edge of 900 meter wall. We watched the sun setting. That was a great night.

What are the tittie bars like in NZed? My friend doesn't give them high marks.
