British Indians suffer more heart attacks but live longer By Rashmee Z. Ahmed Times News Network Friday, September 5, 2003 London - The British Indian is more at risk of a heart attack than his white co-citizen but Mr Patel still stands a better chance than Joe Public of surviving to fight another day. These are the marginally optimistic conclusions of a new study published in the authoritative British Medical Journal. They reinforce earlier Californian research of better Asian survival after a heart attack. A similar, earlier, study of British Pakistanis and Bangladeshis had the same conclusions, leading to calls for more research into why South Asians have stouter hearts. But I.B.Squire, one of the three authors of the new study, told TNN, the Indian patients displayed an alarming tendency to be younger than whites when they suffered heart failure. Indians also suffered more hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease. Squire, who said it may be difficult to extrapolate for India from the UK study, added: "Our observations may suggest that this problem (of coronary heart disease) is one which may well increase in these (Indian) patients in the UK and possibly in India". But the real story emerging from the study's three-year tracking data is the unexpected, even "puzzling" tendency of Indians to survive heart failure better than white patients. The authors, who conducted their research in the Indian- dominated English city of Leicester, said this could be because Indians receive "better family support after (hospital) discharge". It could also be because the Indian patients' "heart failure was less advanced at the point of first (hospital) admissionÂ…(or) by a differing cause of heart failure in ethnic minority populations…", they said. The study has already prompted calls for further research into the co-relation between ethnicity and the development and course of disease. Squire said: "Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is common in Indians in India as well as in Indians living in communities outside India. As the management of CHD and other diseases improves in India and the population starts to age then the prevalence of heart failure will increase".
