does the oil in sesame is good for the body? (grounded just before eating, in coffee mill) |

This is an interesting topic. Good quality sesame oil contains a powerful antioxidant, so your body can handle this a lot better than the typical highly unsat urated oils most people consume these days. I'd suggest raw, organic tahini in small amounts. It's not clear if your body will be overloaded with arachidonic acid if you use - and don't misuse - sesame oil, so I can't say. I wouldn't even think of cooking with it, except at very low temperatures, but tahini has a nice taste and if you add tiny amounts to certain foods it tastes good without providing much omega 6 PUFAs. You can also refrigerate tahini and then drain the oil that's at the top, which is mostly omega 6 PUFAs. If your body is presently overoaded with arachidonic acid, I don't know if good quality sesame oil will help, though. If you have an inflammatory disorder you would be able to tell, but if not, you won't know. I prefer to have the Mead acid in me instead of arachidonic acid, but it's really an issue of biochemical activity and AA metabolization. I don't think any study has ever been done with sesame oil in this context, and you also have to know that the oil is top quality, but you can try it and see what happens. Personally, I won't take the chance, because I like the taste of butter better anyway. |

I do not recommend sesame oil at all. Small amounts of organic, raw tahini - with the oil drained off the top - MIGHT be okay. Until experiments are done, we won't know, and there is no reason to take the chance at this point. Now it would be interesting to take a few "essential fatty acid deficient" animals, ones that have Mead acid instead of AA or EPA/DHA/DPA in them, and see what feeding them tahini in fairly large amounts does to them. I would feed them berries and other foods rich in antioxidants. I have a feeling there would be little AA in their tissues, because AA may just be epiphenomenal. In other words, unless you eat food rich in AA itself, you might not get AA in your cells if you are eating a diet high in antioxidants. Thus, biochemical activity, producing free radicals, may be the key. This would mean textbooks would have to be rewritten, because they say that it is "natural" for AA to incorporate, but this may not be the case at all. Unlike others here, I'm only interested in the evidence and in the scientific reality. There is too much evidence to suggest that eating large amounts of omega 3 and 6 PUFAs is a good idea, and until we know exactly what the key mechanism is, the only intelligent thing to do is to avoid them, and instead eat very tasty food that is low in PUFAs. It may not even be a good idea to eat food rich in Mead acid PUFAs, if there were such foods available. Let your body make its own PUFAs until the evidence is clear. In Fife's recent book, "Coconut Cures," he has a chart of heart disease rates as of 2 or 3 years ago, and the people with the lowest - by far - eat the most coconut. Don't be mislead by the snake oil salesmen who are now fish oil salesmen. They just want your money, nothing more. |
