Default TDF Newbie Questions

I couldn't find a good thread to post this question, and thought there should be a thread for relative newbies to ask questions which may be obvious to those who understand racing.

Here is my (stupid) question:
I know there are time bonuses for the intermediate sprints. From the official Tour de France web site, it looks like there are no time bonuses for the climbs -- only points for the climbers contest. Is this right? I also don't see time bonuses for finishing the stage first, second, etc. I thought there were time bonuses for winning a stage, coming in second etc. If there are, how many seconds do you get for first, second, etc.

Thanks.

That's right no time bonuses for any intermidiate climbs. There are time bonuses for finishing the stage 1st, 2nd and 3rd and that's how Hushovd is now wearing Yellow as he came in second yesterday picking up 12 seconds in time bonus. Here is the break down for time bonuses and then points only for the green and polka-dot jerseys. Also some of the finishes are at the top of climbs so the climbers do get a chance for time bonuses but only at these finishes.

Time Bonuses and Points

General Classification (Yellow Jersey) Time Bonuses (in seconds)
Stage Finish 1st-2nd-3rd 20-12-8
Intermidiate Sprints 1st-2nd-3rd 6-4-2

Green Jersey Points
Flat Stage Finish 1st-2nd-3rd...25th 35-30-26-24-22-20-19...1
Mountain Stage Finish 1st-2nd-3rd...20th 25-22-20-18-16-15-14...1
High Mountain Stage Finish 1st-2nd-3rd...15th 20-17-15-13-12-10-9...1
Intermediate Sprint 1st-2nd-3rd 6-4-2
Individual Time Trial 1st-2nd-3rd...10th 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1

Mountain Points (Polka-Dot Jersey)
Hors Category 1st-2nd-3rd...15th 40-35-30-26-22-18-16-14...4-2-1
Category 1 1st-2nd-3rd...12th 30-26-22-18-14-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
Category 2 1st-2nd-3rd...10th 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1

Default Good site for newbs

Is there a web site that explains the ins & outs of the Tour de France for newbies?

Or even a book or long article in a recent magazine?

I'm watching it nightly on TV and learning the ropes, but still a lot I dont' understand.

I'd appreciate knowing how much over an individual rider can go over the best time on the Alpe d'Huez ITT before that rider would get eliminated. Is there a risk of some riders from major teams getting eliminated?

According to the rules the time limit for a ITT is winners time plus 25% but for ITT of a special nature (I presume this would fit that category) it is plus 33%. So there could be some that do fall outside and are eliminated.

A number of people could be eliminated in the Alpe d'Huez ITT, if 33% + winner's time is the standard. That could eliminate some of the sprinters and some of the flats domestiques.

I think quite a few will be out of the time but there is a provision if more than 20% are out of the time a new elimination point can be set, subject to the stewards decision.

I would swear that there are in fact intermediate points awarded in the Polkadot Jersey competition? I could be wrong?

Sorry, I just noticed you were talking about time bonuses, not points.

Default What about money?

Thanks for the excellent info. so far.

Here's another one:

Is there prize money associated with winning a stage, winning the GC in the Tour de France, etc.?
