I used to ride 52/20, back in Portugal. The area I usually rode it was pretty level, with some hills.

I am now looking for one Fixie here in Ireland, and I probably will keep the same ration, since the terrain is somewhat similar.

48/16 fixed. i live in cleveland, the only hills here are pretty much do-able. the detroit-superior bridge's bike lane is ******* terrifying, however. downhill with rocks, glass, people that drive like they own the road and busses flying alongside you. other than that, it 's pretty smooth sailing around here.

Back in the day I rode a 45 x 13 with a sissy-brake... that was in the city...

These days I'm running 47 x 16 without a brake in the hills of eastern Iowa.

32/15 SS MTB is undergeared for Melbourne's small hills.
48/18 Street Fix - Only just built so not enough testing time.

Fixie skidders - what ratio do you find works best for long skids?

My SS is a 52x16. I blew out 2 cheap BB's last year hitting steep hills. Hoping a RaceFace x-type will fix that problem. I like the speed. Thats why I went SS in the first place, trying to make the bike as light as possible without getting into carbon.

Hi.

I finished building up my SingleSpeed(freewheel hub - not fixed) a few weeks ago.
Converted my Bauer Momentum I've had for 12 years.
Its now one of my winter training bikes - but its also now the only bike I'm training on and loving it.
Nicely different to riding my 18 speed.
Its pretty hilly around here so I've got 39 / 17 which gives me 61 inch gear.
Have got down to 45rpm on one climb(and heart rate on my CS200 at 89%) and spun up to 170rpm - which I've never(never needed to) do on my other road bikes.
I'm hoping this will give me more strenght up hills as I think I was usually taking it too easy on my road bike. Its certainly harder so hopefully thats a sign....strenght will build.

Paul

There is a guy riding the British Etape Sportive London - Canterbury 120 miles on a fixie; wonder what ratio he's using?

By the way, look out for the free 68 page Tour guide that we're giving away free with the Guardian on Monday 2nd.

Started out with 32-20 on my new Haro Mary SS 29'r, couple of mountain bike rides and some commuting done, I've now moved to 32-16, not taken it off road yet but for commuting it's been good, if fairly heavy up the steeps around Sydney. May have to swap out to 18t at the rear if the legs aren't up to it.

Specialized Langster Tokyo

came with 42 x 16. rode this for a few days in rolling hills of Orange County CA. geared out at about 18 MPH.

so I recently changed to a 14 rear cog. did a few rides and now i don't gear out until 20 - 21 MPH. 5% hills are seated grinds -- climbed a few 7% - 9% hills. standing @ 35 - 45 RPM.

also bought a 15 just in case. have not tried the 15.

ordered a 46 chainring -- waiting for it to come in.
