Season runs from March to October (roadracing).
There's plenty of clubs with cyclo-cross though during Oct-Feb.

Join your local club - the Irish Cycling Fed will have the address of clubs in your location.

Hi Martin,

I live on the Caragh Lake side of Killorglin and currently my favorite ride is around Caragh Lake, Glencuttane, Beaufort and back home. I see very few cyclists on the road which is a shame as it is such a fantastic place to ride.

you probably flew by me in early august while I leisurly plodded my way around the lake. Its stunning and a well kept secret me thinks. the route you describe sounds fantastic, how long does it take? Will be down with my wife the weekend of 9th September and might hook up for a spin if Im allowed out to play!!

Hi all,
Probably a bit late to join this forum but seeing as it's active again thought I'd add my two cents.

I'm Irish, but now living in Toronto, Canada. Moved over here a while back and loving it so far.

From Dublin originally, used to race for first St. Tiernans and then Amev. Did a couple of Junior Tours before discovering the booze and girls and then suddenly the sacrifices didn't seem so easy to make. Have much respect for the guys I used to cycle with who kept it up seriously all these years.

Over here I've bought a decent bike (much cheaper here...what a shock ha ha). PLan on training over the winter and possibly getting back into the racing over here.

I competed too : AMEV was I recall the club of Mel Sutcliffe, right ?

I used to be with the Orwell.

Yes...that's right...the 'legend' Mel Sutcliffe. That's going back a few years now (maybe 95ish) but he was the main man at AMEV at that time alright.

There's another guy I used to have a lot of respect for back then, and indeed now cos I know he still races - Stephen o'Sullivan, at the time he was with Bray Wheelers, but not sure where he is now.

Mel used to have a shop there on the Crumlin Road.
he was a tough hombre was Mel : some of his brothers cycled as well but his name I definitely remember from the Amev.
(trying to keep up with those blue and white shorts !).

O'Sullivan is still racing - although not at the highest level but he's still out there.
Dave Peelo was another contemporary of mine from Sorrento CC.

I've recently moved to Ireland (Cavan Town) from Australia Sydney (originally from Melbourne). I love the empty rural roads compared to Sydney Russian roulette but boy is it cold. Had to seriously update my winter kit. Also still getting my confidence on cornering in the cold after loosing the front end in a straight line (exalerating out of a corner).

The biggest downer is your bike & yourself being constantly covered in crud. Everything is starting to squeak & grind.

Am looking forward to the vets racing & the wicklow 200. Also looking forward to getting aroung the Kingfisher cycling trail. Saving that up for warmer weather.

Love Ireland though especially living in a small town (everyone so friendly). The Irish really do have a special charm all their own. anyone living in my neck of the woods love to get some guys to ride with.

Actually just about to move to your neck of the woods (new job. Have been working at Quinn Direct in Cavan. Starting with Stryker in Limerick town in about 2 weeks) Really happy about the change (nothing against Cavan but my job at Quinns really sucked).

Looking foward to it big time.

Will be after joining a club down there getting on some group rides meeting up with sme cycling buddies.

Any local knowledge you can give me would be much appreciated.

Ps Don't laugh at how much I rug up for the climate you have to understand I'm from a hoy country.
