My son bought his Schwinn comfort bike from Canadian tire, I
know its not the good old schwinn but a very decent bike for 300.00 canadian. The welding on the frame seems to be well done, good paint job, wheels turn freely etc I tweaked the brakes and derailleur and everything works as intended. Then my wife tried it and asked for one...so we have 2 new bikes for the price of 1 very good one. This product seems to be an honest product.I compared this schwinn with some raleigh, supercycle, CCM and they are superior for the same price IMHO So yes we bought relatively low quality bikes but for our application they are quite competent. Schwinn is maybe back on track ? |

I didn't think Schwinn was that good ever. I had a brand new one in the 70's as a kid and my sister had a Raleigh. I gotta tell you the Raleigh was much better in all aspects. Curt |

My Schwinn Peloton(one of the last of the real Schwinns) has been a fantastic bike. Reynolds 853 frame, rides like a dream. |

That depends who you ask, but I consider a real Schwinn any Schwinn built before the Pacific Cycle buyout. Mine was made in 1990, when Schwinns were only available at Schwinn dealers. A friend of mine has a Schwinn Sidewinder he purchased at Wal-Mart, and it's just not the same. It bothers me to see a classic American name being cranked out by Chinese slave labor. But it's a decent bike, for a department store bike. It's nowhere near as nice or smooth as a low end bike shop bike, though. |

A heavy road bike. Not very advanced, but they did last. Too heavy IMHO. Many European bicycles were much lighter and more advanced, but Schwinn had the name here in the states. Curt |

Schwinns made from the mid 80s on weren't exactly heavy, either. Varsities were heavy, for sure, though. |

You do know that workers in MAINLAND Chinese bicycle factories work in conditions that would make an OSHA inspector have a coronary, right? 20 hour days, no safety equipment, no respirators for the painters, no union, no representation. Workers are required to live in a company dormitory(for which they must pay) and eat at a company cafeteria(bad food for which they also must pay). It's not a good thing. Mainland China isn't Taiwan. China is a horrible human rights violator, worse than Iraq, but greedy CEOs and cheap consumers don't care. I don't buy Chinese stuff if there's a non-Chinese product available. So, yes, I DO know what I'm talking about. |

Please read and absorb this: http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/55/312.html http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/s642502.htm http://www.afpc.org/crm/crm305.htm I can list example after example, but that's unnecessary. Buying Chinese made products is wrong. It's wrong because exploiting poor people is wrong, and it's wrong because exporting jobs away from the US and Europe is wrong. I will not buy Chinese products, and I do not shop at WalMart. I'm sure, though, that your experiences in the factories are totally different that what Chinese factory workers report. |

Factories in China meet the same environmental standars as those in the US or Europe? |

Are Chinese standards & practices improving as they gain affluence through, and are influenced by, their increasing presence in the global marketplace? If they are, maybe it's not such a good idea to restrain that. All I know for sure is, Chinese workers have to eat and make a living, same as everybody else. I suspect it's pretty well impossible to totally boycott Chinese- made goods. Finished product might be assembled elsewhere, but there's a good chance many of the components are made in China. Especially electronic components. Maybe even a lot of the tooling and machinery that actually makes the product. cheers, Tom -- -- Powered by FreeBSD Above address is just a spam midden.
