At least if you ever see me and bag me for riding a geared bike, I can
remind you of someone who owns a triple hehehe

What's your tatt going to say/look like? Mine will say "That's not how
you spell Collnaggo".. or not

Or http://www.rivbike.com/html/bikes_quickbeam.html. I bought one of
their Romulus bikes a few months ago. Very nice and pretty good value
even after paying shipping and import duties. Mind you, the $A has
dropped about 12% against the $US since I purchased...

Or get an 2nd hand bike with horizontal dropouts and freewheel hubs
(these are usually pretty cheap, even when of good quality) and convert
it to a fixed wheel by putting on a track cog in place of the freewheel
and using a cup-and-cone bottom bracket lockring as a lockring (lockring
not needed if you have brakes on the bike). Run the chain on the inner
chainring of a double crankset to get a good chainline. I converted my
20-year-old tourer to a fixed wheel in that way and now use it for
commuting on crappy days. The only parts I had to buy were the track cog
and a new chain.

Low-blow!

do the Alpine Classic and get back to me matey

did some trials on weekend. you know how when you've been riding a bike
and you stop and get on-off the bike and you get home and realise you
have yet again managed to put a perfect print of your big chainring on
the inside of your calf? Well, mines gonna be permanent eek:

a few months back sitting round, beers in hand being philosophers
bouncin' round what would would you get as a tattoo? Well the only thing
I could concievably justify that was with me for life and coursing thru
me viens was bikes...

Sorry, couldn't resist! :-D

Okay! <looks around for helicopter option>
Do (m)any non-racer people do that on a double? There's always the
push option

Noooooo! :P

Yeah, I thought the same thing when I typed that question. Of course,
I've always been opposed to tatts (on me) so I'd never get one. An artsy
sprocket tatt would be nice. Or a wheel. Maybe if I was obsessed with a
single bike brand/model - it's logo?

Hi Hippy,

You might like to check out the following track bikes. All ready to ride
and drilled for front and rear brakes (brakes not included) And best of
all, available in Oz

Fuji Track (under 1k) KHS Flite 100 2003 model (2004 model not available
~1K) Cannondale Track bike (2K) Specialized langster (under 2k drilled
for front only I think)

You might be better off sending more and getting a good all round bike
straight out of the box then putting an old bike together with a rather
expensive eno hub.

Cheers Koon

Not yet, I spoke to the distributer a while back and he said, he would
gladly send it to my LBS. But, I just want to go an actual shop that has
Fuji bikes so I can see for myself and work out the sizing rather then
rely on specs from the website.

i'm pretty much a test first before buying sorta guy.

Cheers Koon

smarty pants!

I did it in 2002 on same but after fitting triple (and no doubt more
training) cut just over an hour off my time this year to make it
really comical the only cassette they had during the xmas break when
i was upgrading was a 13-29! combined with a 30-42-53 it was zany.
never touched 2 biggest cogs (probably woulda fallen over sideways if
i had )

Update from blog entry:

15 May 2004:

Ordered an ENO eccentric hub from Dan at Atomic Industries. 130mm
spaced, 32h, $225. Arrival time = ?

Drove (urgh) to Bicycle Recycle in the hope of picking up a used road
frame for my 'road-fixie' project. This shop is COOL! So much bike
stuff! I was there all afternoon - which kinda made up for the crappy
drive over. Spotted some suitable but cheap/heavy bikes out front and
looked at a few candidates inside - some frames, some complete bikes.
Looking at 54-56cm frames. The Perkins that "Jay" mentioned on the phone
the week before was 56cm seat tube but 58cm top tube (C-C) which I
thought too long and moved onto measuring:
- nice white pearl Perkins, 54cm, $650 complete bike
- grey Viner who's silly owner had painted over the original paint! 54cm
$550 complete bike, waiting on whether or not they will strip it down
to frame only for $200.
- nice red Viner frame $350
- MBK(?) yellow frame $250
- pink Vetta w/ Campy 8spd, $200 for frame/fork only

The pink Vetta would've been perfect (I would've left it pink too!) but
it had internal cable routing and the grey Viner seemed much nicer to
ride for some reason. So, I'm waiting to see whether or not they pull
down the grey Viner and how much its frame would be...

Now that I think about it, the 58cm toptube on the red Perkins might be
okay for me, given that I ride a 56cm toptube + 10cm stem now.. can't
test ride a frame though Need some a.b opinions about this...

who's spending money now ??? (sound of 'hardcore badge being ripped off
the pretender)

What's the issue with Internal cable routing Dont tell
me my road bike isnt 'correct'

Is that hub the flip-flop model?

$225, hey? hmmmm. maybe I can do something with that ol' (never used)
Tange2 no-brand hanging in the shed. Not that Im spending money, you
understand. Merely 're-aligning' some cashflow surplus...

I've built a SS up for free already. After that the rules allow money to
flow freely ;-)

Seriously though, it's a trick hub that allows me to SS/fix basically
any road frame I come across, without the need to weld in track ends or
buy more matched sprockets.

Also, I've got to buy the frame because I'm not going to hack my Apollo
frame for this project and dumpster crawling doesn't yield results
quick enough.

>(sound of 'hardcore badge being ripped off the pretender)

Ahh.. that was really itchy man, thanks! ;-)

>What's the issue with Internal cable routing Dont

Your road bike isn.. ;-)

Well, this bike isn't going to have any cables on it ('cept for the
front brake cable) so internal cable routing would mean big holes left
in the frame for Mr. Rust to visit. I 'could' fill up the holes, but
like I said I liked the other bike and I'd rather not have to fill them
(time & money).

>Is that hub the flip-flop model?

Yep. So I'll be able to turn it into a SS when I crash too many times in
'fixed mode'. :-)

Dude, you have a SS, the rule outlined above applies.. YOU ARE HEREBY
ALLOWED TO SPEND UP!! :-D

What sort of dropouts does that bike/frame have? You might not need an
ENO. You could also get gripsport to do a dropout conversion for ya -
that'd be heaps cheaper. Of course, with the ENO, you can fix/ss other
bikes later on..

hippy
- sorry for all that yelling.. excited is all..

They did have a few new-ish 'dales in stock. I have no idea of the sizes
but some of them looked nice (and costly). You'd really have to go in
there and look for stuff your size and matching your budget.

Hmm.. $800 for a 'dale sounds pretty cheap! You realise these things are
stupid light right? Well, the CAAD7's are. From memory, all the Crack-and-
fails in Bicycle Recycle were complete bikes. They might have frames
though. Give 'em a call:

672a South Rd, Moorabbin, VIC 3189 Mon-Fri 9:00am- 5:00pm, Sat 9:00am-
4:00pm Tel: (03) 9555-8692, Fax: (03) 9555-2441

>Raceline isn't nearly so exciting as other brands.

You could always strip it down and repaint it in some 'fully sick' race
paint/chameleon colours or something? People wont care what brand it is
because it'll look so frickin' cool as is!!!

hippy
- dreaming of a nice paint job (will end up with spraycan job)

Hey Stu, you didn't happen to see any Cannondale-esque, non-quill stem
thingy frames at Bicycle Recyle when you were there did ya? I'm on the
look out for a new frame, not the hugest fan of my current one and I'm
currently lusting after Cannondales. However, the cost of such a frame
is rather high, new (about $800 for a CAAD 4 at Cycle Science) so if I
could get a niceish frame to go with my niceish wheels and groupset, I'd
be a happy camper.

Let me just make clear that I'm not saying that my frame isn't good
enough in quality for me. I just don't like it. Yes, I hold silly
grudges. Besides, I'm narcissistic and Raceline isn't nearly so
exciting as other brands.
