Are there no more patriots? None who would question the motives and methods of the scoundrels in the present administration? From where I live I see and hear no shortage of those who question Mr. "I'm a uniter, not a divider" and Mr. "I'll be back at Halliburton when this is over." I consider it a good thing when considering the alternative. It's good, too, that some states and cities have the gumption to proclaim they will not enforce provisions of the Patriot Act. The true test of a vibrant and free society is whether the people become sheep under times of duress. It's not the first time this sort of thing has been tried, and it probably won't be the last. The real scandal is large media companies which won't (*cough* FOX *cough*) call a spade a spade and thus have throttled many a voice in radio or TV who should publicly question dubious decisions and actions. i.e. If we call the President a booger-brain, we won't be invited to anymore press conferences and our revenues will suffer. I am amazed at the outright level of panic and fear coming from the left in the almost total absence of incidents such as the one Brian and his friends keep claiming are happening here every day, in every state. The conduct of the LAPD in this case and maybe tens of thousands of others was in the gray area at best, and downright criminal in a whole lot. Letting one high profile murderer who is a minor risk to reoffend and is being watched by every media outlet on the planet pretty much 24/7 doesn't seem to be a bad tradeoff for cleaning out the Gates/LAPD mess. The history that gave rise to the Writ of Habeas Corpus (also know as the Writ of Freedom) is repleat with examples of people held for years by executive power with no recourse to the courts. The Writ ofHabeas Corpus is something the Founders of this country viewed as being essential to preventing the rise of tyranny on these shores. But then, Ashcroft could juast as easily say what the Soviets said of prisoners in the Gulag as reported by Alexander Solsnytesin(sp?), "We don't make mistakes." |

One more thing. Let's assume that Padilla is a terrorist. Should he be given the benifit of law; due process in a court of law? Consider the following dialogue from "A Man For All Seasons." Roper So now you'd give the Devil benefit of law! More Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? Roper I'd cut down every law in England to do that! More Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you - where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country's planted thick with laws from coast to coast - man's laws, not God's - and if you cut them down - and you're just the man to do it - d'you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake. |

He should be given every right guaranteed to a US citizen, and if not, and we allow it, it's our fault. They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790), Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759 Bill C |

I'd forgotten about that quote. Good stuff. I suspect the Founders are getting pissed. It would be nice if they could come back and shake the Republic up a wee bit. |

When John Ashcroft decides that there is enough evidence to charge Reliant for gaming the energy business in California, it is significant. You do note that he did not charge Grey Davis. But you have him convicted already. http://tinyurl.com/2dsm4 What leads me to think of the energy companies as culpable in this issue is the fact that individual traders who worked for them have gone on record about the tricks they did: shutting down plants for "maintenance" and selling power out of state then back (paper transfers only) simply to jack the price up. Among other things. -- tanx, Howard Q: Can we call it a quagmire yet? remove YOUR SHOES to reply, ok? |
