But how sudden was it really? The guy had won one day races he won 10 day tours, climbing stages, etc. He was signed to a $1m plus deal by a team that expected him to be on the podium at the Tour. He came back with more of a climbers body and after a lot of work finished 4th at the Vuelta with no podium ambition. Where is the sudden? It's not there except to those who want to beileive it is. |

No, I don't think Lance is doping? His training and preparation was superb. How else can you explain it? This man almost died, he saw his mortality and looked it straight in the face. I don't think he could stand to live a lie if he doped. He saw an opportunity to make his name live on a little longer than his physical being. I think he is on a bigger mission than just winning the tour. The tour is just a means to an end.

I don't understand the idea that "if he win's he must be cheating." Dominance in sports is common, either by a single individual or an organization based around an individual or two. Was Wayne Grezky a cheater? How about Tiger Woods? Bourg in Tennis? What about Pele and the Brazilians at soccer? Mark Spitz and this new kid Phelps? Are all of these guys cheaters just becasue they dominate?
It seems to me the recipe is simple. Take someone who is very, very physically talented and mentally tough and support them with the backing of the likes of Trek, Nike, Giro and everything else, and train them until the cows come home. Hard work, good intelligence, research down to the last cookie crumb and all the cash you can throw at it and you are bound to bring forth a winner. Lance is that AND he has a killer story too! Get out and ride! |

Are there drugs that improve natural skills and hand/eye coordination? Gretzky, Woods, Borg and Pele are involved in sports that do not require sustained maximal or near maximal anaerobic or aerobic efforts. They are skill dominated sports. Swimming, cross country skiing, cycling, athletics, rowing and all the strength/power sports are prone to doping. Quote:
If it were so simple there would be changes of the yellow jersey during the Tour on a daily basis.

Not so since not every team has the all parts of that equation. Postal controlled who rides with the yellow by setting the pace. They where out front setting each day up exactly how they wanted to because they could. Your point about "hand eye" sports is well taken but that doesn't change the principle that all sports have dominate figures and teams, and it doesn't address people like Spitz and Phelps and others like Thorpe from Australia. Get out and ride |

They used to have a name for people who doped too long--burnouts. Do you think a burnout could win the Tour?

I think that may have been true back when the drugs of choice were amphetamines or steroids. Those drugs seem to give athletes a temporary performance gain while they're ultimately tearing them down and damaging their bodies. But it seems like the drugs that are available now (when used "properly" ) have the ability to make the athletes stronger without doing damage to their bodies. I could be wrong. And by saying that, in no way do I mean to imply that Armstrong (or anyone else) is a doper. |

Only American track athletes have a problem with doping, but thats only because of the huge money in todays amateur athletics. There's no way any American cyclist or cycling team would even consider doping... they couldn't EVER afford the best team doctors and latest doping info that it would take to beat WADA and their crack team of anti-dopers! Give your heads a shake... and the fact that Lance even says he doesn't dope seals the matter, CASE CLOSED! Lets all get on with life and sit down with a cold beer and watch the Pharmacy Games... er ... the Olympic Games this weekend.

Just want to take up that issue of money - do athletes earn more than the likes of Ullrich and Armstrong ? |
