Very rough road -- don't like it. You need 28mm tyres at 60psi to ride on roads like that. Beach Road or bust ![]() |

The hillbillies aren't so bad at certain times of day. I've copped plenty of grief on the beach too... And I don't know which way you road out there, but I've got about 5 different loops I can do between 50 and 150 clicks, without doubling back, for a total of 400km of quality training roads, all sealed. Great! Which roads? I'll get out there one day. I only live 8km from Beach Road, so there's the obvious daily temptation for me to knock a quick 50km in well under 2hrs. |

I'm not 100% on all the names of the roads, so I'll investigate and post in the next little while. Beach road is definitely a good training venue when it's not too busy, and you will find you get a lower average out through the hills (I do). |

Are there double lane roads, or bike lanes? |

Not really, but there isn't so much traffic once you're more than 15/20km from town either. If you stay left when you hear a car coming you're generally OK. Although the cars travel a bit quicker, most are sensible - I'd say overall I've probably had more gried on beach rd and on the way to beach rd than out through the hills - the occasional ute does act up though. And different roads always take a different sort of concentration and skill so I guess 'exercise caution' is always good advice. |

Actually, the Melba Hwy between the Kinglake turnoff and Yarra Glen has a shoulder which is kind of a bike lane (though not designated as such). That forms part of some of the loops I do. |

I live in Ashburton which I find nice and central to my fav rides: 70 km Frankston and back via Warrigal Rd/Beach Rd, 100 if via High St. Fitzroy St. & Beach Rd. 65 km to Olinda and back via Burwood Hwy and Mountain HWY up the 1/20. If I can psyche myself up to do The Wall as well, then this turns into a 80km (approx) ride. Other rides that I have found to be good: Burke Rd and then past Reservor to Eltham and then Panton Hill. (90km approx) Punt Rd all the way to Epping (60km approx) Royal Rde/Sydney Road to Cambelfield and back (70km approx) Gardener's Creek bike path into the city and back (35km approx) Anniversary Trail to the Eastern Fwy and ack (40km approx, 50km with variants). |
