This Piepoli looks like a consistent, strong rider. He likes to ride the races that might be well publicized in Europe but not in the USA. I guess that's why I don't know much about this rider.

He's done very well in many other races. The best he's done in the Vuelta a Espana is 8th in 1999. That's very impressive. But that was 5 years ago, and he's going to be 33 this year in September. He's either right in his prime or maybe a little past it. It will be interesting to watch this rider's progress in Sept. Actually, when you look back on his record, it seems like his best race is the Vuelta a Burgos.

He came 5th, domestique or not, it is a bloody good effort IMO.

The fact he was a domestique makes it even better.

Aha! It looks like it's Landis' day in the sun now. Maybe Heras will be upset to have left the posties.

I hope Landis does a good job as team leader.

If Tyler stays in form, this should be exciting. Go Tyler!

I'm pretty sure Cadel was never the world champ. He won the mountain bike world cup series at least once, possibly twice.

I have my hopes on Cunego Of all contenders he has the most talent and a winning mentality.

I am curious if the USPS guys can handle him without Heras. I think Floyd is no more as a decent domestic. His good TdF performance is nothing to sniff at, but the TdF winner almost always has a few domestics in the upper ranks.

It seems they profit from being with Lance almost as much as giving up all that energy from him (point in case is Heras who did better in the TdF as domestic).

Whatever the outcome the one who wins it wont be a surefire bet as we have in the TDF

Wow! That's really disappointing. I'd say you're right that it's probably more of a psychological thing than a physical one. But who knows? Maybe he really does have mono or something. Wish he were racing in the Vuelta. Hopefully he can come-back strong next year.

Even more disappointing is no Tyler.

Simoni isnt there either.

Vino , Heras and Sevilla fighting for the win then.
Dont think Landis has a chance on a tour with as many climbs as this - its relentless and unlike the TdF where the climbs are wedged into 2 sets of 2 days , these are spread throughout the race.
The Vuelta is often considered by the pros as the toughest of the 3 main tours.
