Wrong, of course, as usual.

Hmm, yes, you could be right.

My queries arose partly from being genuinely baffled at the idea of
having that many gears and partly playing devil's advocate to see what
people would say in response, and I appreciate your detailed comments.

From:
http://www.legslarry.beerdrinkers.c.../Worlds2001.htm

"A Nice Day. Potter down to Brighton and hook up with the mob at Preston
Park. This is a highly unusual track. It’s almost, but not quite,
square. The four corners are all distinct and lightly banked, and the
tarmac surface is new and very smooth. And it’s not level! Yep, a
velodrome with a hill in it! This bizarre
phenomenon clearly required investigation...."

Are any tracks in the form of a figure of eight? Some events need
livening up a bit, I think. Would beat Rollerball!

There is the wonderful Human Powered Rollercoaster:

Perhaps not quite what you had in mind, but a glorious thing nonetheless.

Not as violent as having a cross-roads in the middle of the track but it
does indeed look wonderful.
