Just seen a postie cycling along, regulation h*lm*t on, puffing away on a
fag. How many more times dangerous would the fag be than the helmet, or than just cycling? -- Tumbleweed email replies not necessary but to contact use; tumbleweednews at hotmail dot com |

Was he riding hands-free while he rolled his own and then fumbled for a box of matches? Very dangerous. Except on a recumbent trike, of course, but then those riders are pipe smokers. Colin |

I think one's accident risk is raised to above the alcohol threshold levels for about ten minutes after consuming a fag. It's a phenomenon known as "microsleeps", momentary lapses of attention during which things can "appear from nowhere". But lots of motorists smoke so don't expect any legislation. -- Chris Malcolm cam@infirmatics.ed.ac.uk +44 (0)131 651 3445 DoD #205 IPAB, Informatics, JCMB, King's Buildings, Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ, UK [http://www.dai.ed.ac.uk/homes/cam/] |

[cycling postie in h****t, smoking] > Sounds like a total idiot to me. I dunno. Not so long back someone was discussing how, in the good old days, quite a few of the Tour de France competitors at the end of a day's ride would be lighting up fags. I'd still bet most of them turned in times few people here could match. Doesn't Viz character Postman Prat like to puff on a tab? Then again, possibly he's not a role model. Or was your comment more concerned with the h****t? -- Joe * If I cannot be free I'll be cheap |

I doubt it. Your speed meant you exceeded the design limits of the helmet by an order of magnitude and it failed in a brittle fracture mode which means it did not absorb the energy as it was supposed to but failed with several fractures instead. OTOH helmets are believed to exacerbate neck injuries. Tony |

In much the same way as when driving a car to work, we don't follow the Formula 1 requirement to don fireproof suits. |

If you hang around you will soon find that helmets are a hot button topic. You can easily search through previous threads with "helmet" in the subject line to read any amount of arguments on the subject, several of them very recent. It does take up an inordinate amount of bandwidth here. You can also, if you want take a look at: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/ or the helmet FAQ at http://www.magma.ca/~ocbc/ and so on. -- Joe * If I cannot be free I'll be cheap |
