While the Tufo Tyres quote certain weights, I would be interested to know what they weigh on a set of reasonably accurate scales. I do know that Conti advertise their Olympic 110g tyre as 110g. But when I weighed several of them, they were all within a couple of grams of 140g. I then applied this same process to the Hand made Sondeklasse 165g to find they weighed around 195g.
This leads me to believe that tyre manufacturers are quoting the bag weight only, excluding the tube and maybe even the base tape. After having a Tufo 135g here for a short while, but without access to scales, I would be surprised if Tufo didn't do the same as Conti. I also found the bag to be very stiff, which doesn't make for a "quick" tyre. This also reduces the grip on the board tracks, which is one of the issues raised by the original message poster. |

Think u've gotta learn how to ride a bike especially on a banked track. Sounds like ur a danger to urself and everyone around u. supersonics may be slippery especially brand new going off the mark but at speed thyre perfectly fine and a damn good tire although they do wear quickly. |

on the track no matter what people say it is only about 15% of staying on track is due to tyre and supra sonics ar't slipery if ther not above 160 psi they will move on teh rim and feel funny but staying on the tarck is done by keeping preasure on the cranks and even preasure too same way a bucket will hold water in it while spining it over ur head but once u lose preasure in teh spins or the handle brakes u get wet.

The track has a plastic coating on it to withstand the HARSH winters that an outdoor track would have to put up with in Montreal. Even though it is dimpled, the nature of the material is just slippery. The Conti tires haven't been a problem at all on other tracks, I was just put off by the way that they perform. The Tufo's are true to their weight. I've weighed every Tufo that I've bought annd they all weigh less than the printed weight.

I just re-read this thread and i am concerned about what taras0000 has to say about grip on the track. I have had problems with Conti supersonics on the track with a lack of grip bringing me undone, but this was at quite slow speeds........Now if my wheel "wrenched sideways" on me and i didnt lose my line then what did actually happen? If the tyres did lose traction at high speed, then with all respect i dont think i ever want to race with/against you taras000 as cetrifugal force should hold u on the track with virtually any tyres no matter how slippery they may be, maybe there is an aspect of your riding that needs looking at?

I use Dugast and Veloflex Record. Unless you are going REAL slow on the upper banking, tyre/tire adhesion is not a problem. Going slow on turns 1 & 2 at Dunc Gray after a mass start has seen a few slides and "stacks on the mill" on to the duckboards. The banking and centrifugal force straightens out all the corners and there is only a minor steering lean required to negotiate the bend. You could rub Vaseline on your tyres and still be safe. If adhesion in these bends was a problem then you would not see sprint speeds of circa 70kph through the bends or TTers using aerobars! Has anyone noticed the noticeable dip on turns 3 & 4 at Dunc Gray? Or is that my imagination?

I was in a bike shop today and saw some of these Continental Supersonics. They have a very shiny finish to them.Would you be better off hitting them with a very fine wet and dry paper to take the shine off before using them on the track?

I was using 20c version of the supersonics. I found that after a training session on outdoor concrete/asphalt track the tyres had lost the shiny finish and were slightly better prepared for the boards, but still found them a little slippery at low speeds. I find all Conti singles (as opposed to conti clinchers) to have more grip when moving slowly, but can't speak for their longevity as i have used my "Conti Competitions" (road tyre) only a few times on an asphalt track and they are wearing rather fast. |
