Did my first Argus this year - 3hrs 50. As you know, starting in the Open class right at the back of the field does'nt help. There was no bunch to sit in, and I rode all the way on my own. The back-end cyclists were all over the place!
My seeding grade is 31 at the moment, so next year I should have a nice seeded position. I'm aiming for between 3hrs15 and 3hrs30. I'm also doing the Amashovashova this weekend.

Hi, I'm also from SA, live if Pretoria. Also going to do the 94.7 and would also like to know of ANY boosters. Did the 94.7 last year and also 3 Argus', but I think the 94.7 is much more tougher that the Argus. Don't you agree, e-male, Vo2?

. We dont have rides any where near that big here. we would not even have that many people racing. Sounds like cool rides. |

Nicholas, hi, yes the Argus (in Cape Town) is the largest single day cycling event in the world, with, as Vo2 has said, more than 40 000 people entering. I think about 3 000 foreign cyclists. Check out the official site at www.cycletour.org.za. Plan a trip to South Africa and do the race, it is a wonderful event. Besides, we can do with every Aus dollar you can bring. There is still time to enter, it can be done online.
The other event is the 94.7, where they expect about 20 000 entries this year. This race is in Johannesburg. I also think this race is tougher than the Argus. |

The Amashova race this weekend has R100 000 (± A$ 22 000) for the first cyclist to crack the 100km route in under 1hr55!

Hey guys,
I'm also from Johannesburg, South Africa. Gearing up for the 94.7 and hoping to ride a 3hr. Been training since April for this years event. Done 1 Argus and two 94.7's so far as well as the usual calendar fillers. Been riding for 3 yrs now, before that I was a bit of a couch potato but now I'm even thinking of an Ironman *:P During the day I manage an Inbound sales call centre, train every morning ('cept mondays) from 05h00 to 06h00 rain or shine. Tips for 94.7 (In my humble opinion): Be careful of the section of Main rd from Witkoppen rd to William Nicol. It feels like a small incline but it takes it out of you if you don't pace yourself properly. Watch the road surface along the Rooihuiskraal section, if you don't pay attention, you may be adding a pothole with your helmet. Hyde Park hill is a doddle, DON"T let it psyche you out, if you've done the Detour then you've done that little Ou Kaapse Weg hill and you'll know what a real climb is. ![]() The finish has changed so there won't be that cramping climb of the Mineshaft on Kyalami, instead it will be onto the track, immediatly left down the finish straight to the line. this means that you can whack the last section from Woodmead to the entrance to Kyalami without having to save anything for the mineshaft. The last climb up to Kyalami from the Jukskei river is short and with enough momentum from the downhill from Woodmead is fairly easy. Oh yes, don't skid on the Bar-One paving at the Zoo * ![]() Anyway thats my 2c worth. Enjoy the races, enjoy the acid!!! |

okay, this is my first post and it seemed the right place to do it.
I'm 38 years old and live in South Wales UK and I am a Printer. I cycle just for fun, but sometimes it doesn't feel like it. I love cycling in all weathers except rain so as a result haven't been getting out to much lately, from what I've *read there are some serious cycling being done by some of you but if you don't mind I love to read the post's and maybe pick up some tips. Maybe I should have mentioned that I cycle strictly off-road (roads are boring) and my journeys vary from 10-15 miles up to 30-35 miles. |

Welcome to the forums Acid and Lazarus-g! Wow, our member numbers are growing nicely. Soon we'll be having great input in all the discplines from all over the world.
Acid and Roadster: I'm really trying for a 3hr 94.7 this year too. Although the 94.7 is a tough race, I find the last 20k's of the Argus brutal. The Blue Route and Hospital Bend just sapped all my energy this year. Aish, that last bit of Hospital Bend! It still gives me nightmares! Like you say, Ou Kaapse is a REAL climb, but the ride down on the other side is awesome!Lazarus-g: Gee, buddy, how can you say road rides are boring? Have you ever sat in a bunch with 50 or 60 cyclists doing an average of 40km/h? ;D hehe, don't worry, I catch your drift! I agree, a road race does seem boring to someone used to nerve-wrecking mtb'ing. I'd like to give it a go one day. Looks like fun! Fortunately we all have one thing in common here: WE LUV CYCLING!

i agree lazarus if you ride on the road with ur mtb it is not fun. this is cause it feels slow on the road and takes more effort on the road. ;D
i used to ride moslty the road on my mtb . on my biggest road mtb bike ride i was climbing the mountain and it was hard. then a road biker past me like i was standing still > . That did it. i then got a road bike for the road. ;D its much more fun. I still use my mtb but for Dirt only i have a mountain range near my place so i do a big loop 80k its way cool through rain forest and fast decents and big climbs. barely any trafic maybe a car or 2 in the bush. is it flat over where you are? |

Nicholas , I live in South Wales UK. Which is a valley region definitly not flat
because I live at the very bottom of the valley it's all uphill ;D . because I understand that it's a big world out there I know what we call a mountain many people would call a hill. but it's still fun to go up and down the damn thing. despite the fact that the south wales valley's are heavily built up with houses, within 50 yards of my house I'm off-road so it's not to bad.To all you road riders, I do envy the speeds you get up to ! and Nicholas your right about being left standing by them . maybe I should see about a road bike and maybe one day I shall ,but how do you guys cope with the dicks who decide that bikers have no place on the road and as a result give you very little room (or none at all). To get from one off-road track to another. I've got to use the roads for a few miles (and on XC tyres it ain't easy). but those drivers really bug me after the freedom I get Off-road. |
