I had forgot about that ride by Hampsten to L'Alpe D'Huez.

This year's Alpe d'heuz stage was truly awesome.
Hamilton's brave ride, Mayo's excellent stage win, Armstrong's defending and Beloki's great attacking. All on the backdrop of the greatest climb in Tour history and half a million fans cheering all the the riders on. |

Chiappucci's ride was great.
I didn't see anything great about Armstrong/Pantani on Ventoux... Armstrong didn't even try to win the stage anyway, and the time gaps were small.....blah My favorite might have been stage 15 of the 1998 tour: Pantani attacking and stealing the race.

Some of my favorites:
86 Bontempi (stays ahead of 8 full speed pursuers, they dont gain a second) 86 Hinault-Lemond at Alpe D'huez 90 Indurain Luz Ardiden 92 Chiapucci at Sestrieres (the best I guess) 98 Pantani attacks, Ulrich gets a flat and then explodes when trying to get back to Pantani. 03 Armstrong Luz Ardiden

Pantani at Alp D'Huez in 1995, I think, was a great stage.
BigMig following him up the mountain - Pantani got away up the mountain but BM stayed within 2 minutes of the great Italian climber. Superb. Mende 1995 : Jalabert winning on Bastille Day with Indurain and Banesto panicking ! Superb. St Etienne 1985 : the Badger with his nose broken going hell for leather ! Superb. Sestriere and Chiappucci was the the best stage I've seen though Sestriere gets my vote. |

The greatest: Chiapucci - Sestrieres in 1992.
And others great stages: 2003: The great victory of Tyler Hamilton. 2000: Morzine: Heras and Virenque climbing Joux Plane. 1998: Les Deux Alpes, with Pantani. 1997: Courchevel, great Ullrich. 1996: The stage of Pamplona, with the climb of Larrau (in my opinion, one of the steepest mountain in France) and the sinking of Indurain. 1995: Cauterets: Exhibition of Virenque. The stages of Lieja and Mende. Indurain in La Plagne against Pantani and Rominger. 1994: Hautacam, with Indurain, Virenque and Leblanc. Luz Ardiden: Great stage with Virenque. 1992: Indurain in Luxembourg (TT). 1991: Val Louron, Indurain vs. Chiapucci. 1989: Superbagneres: Millar, Delgado and Mottet. The stage in Cauterets, with Indurain winning after attack in Aubisque (I think). The last TT in Paris. And the funny first day with Pedro Delgado. (he lost 2 or 3 minutes in prologue). 1988: Luz Ardiden: Cubino. 1987: Morzine: Great stage, with Roche, Delgado, Chozas, Scheppers and Lejarreta. La Plagne, with Delgado against Roche. 1985: Delgado won in Luz Ardiden with a great stage of his team (Orbea of Txomin Perurena). Unfortunately, we can´t see that stage (fog). And in the Giro: 2003: Pontechianale (after climbing Sampeyre). 2002: Great stage (Folgaria-Passo Coe) with Cadel Evans, Salvodelli... 1999: Oropa. Pantani with mechanic troubles, but he climb very fast and he won the stage. Impressive. A few days later, in other hard stage with Tonale, Gavia, Mortirolo and Valico Santa Cristina, Roberto Heras won. 1998: I don´t remember very well, but a great stage between Tonkov and Pantani in Alpe di Pampeago (or perhaps in Montecampione?). 1996: Marmolada-Pordoi, with a great Olano against Tonkov. But the next day Olano lost the maglia rosa in Mortirolo. 1995: The last mountain stage (Rominger vs. Berzin). 1994: Aprica: Great stage. With an offensive Indurain, excellent Berzin and great Pantani. And Pantani in other stage of that Giro, in Agnello (a great attack in Agnello and in Izoard, Lautaret and Deux Alpes Moreno Argentin helping Berzin, and Indurain with troubles). 1992: I don´t remember what climb was, but in a mountain stage Franco Chioccioli's attack. 1988: Gavia. a dramatic stage, with snow, ice and cold. The winner was Breukink. And in Vuelta a España: 1999: Anglirú. 1995: Jalabert against Mapei in a stage in Avila. 1992: Portillon, Peuressourde, Aspin, Tourmalet and Luz Ardiden. Bad weather and great victory for Cubino. 1985: Recio won a great stage with the help of Delgado, against Robert Millar. 1983: Great Hinault against Julián Gorospe, with Belda and Marino Lejarreta. Then there are a lot of stages: 1959 with Bahamontes, 1964 (Puy-de-Dome with Jimenez vs. Bahamontes); 1973 (the climb of Izoard with Ocaña, Fuente, Anquetil and Poulidor). In Giro, in 1952 an exhibition of Charly Gaul in Monte Bondone in a dramatic stage (more than Gavia in 1988). And many others... Last edited by azurki : 08-01.-2004 at 01:02 AM. |

1989 tips it for me because it was the ultimate climax to one of the all-time great tours - and the superhuman speed Lemond achieved on that day put it on a par with Chiappucci's climb in the guts and balls stakes.

Many great ones stand out to include......
'91 Tour's stage to Val Louron.....Chiappucci and Indurain escape to win ahead of main rivals Bugno and Lemond. '92 Chiappucci's stage to Sestriere '90 Lemond and Indurain's ascent of Luz Ardiden ahead of a faltering Chiappucci '89 Gert Jan Theunisse solos up Alp D'Huez But still... the greatest stage of all time is... '89 Lemond wins TT into Paris :58 seconds ahead of Fignon. This is the stage that inspired me to go buy my very first road bike.....an aluminum Trek 1400 with Shimano 105. White paint with red decals...back in 1989. |

That's the very reason I haven't voted. I got into cycling rather late so I'm not terribly familiar with any of the pre-'96 stars of the Tour. I've heard the names and seen clips from some of their more memorable performances but that doesn't really give you a feel for their ability or style. I don't think that really disqualifies the votes for Armstrong/Pantani as it is perhaps the most memorable for those like myself who are less familiar with the other options listed. It just may be the most honest response possible. ![]() |

Eric Dekker in 2000 holding off the pack by 1/2 a bike length was truely amazing, Steven Roach almost catching Delgardo was heroic, Pantani in 98 was prolific but I cant get passed Lemon in 89, after all those miles both riders must have riddin themselfs to near death in the TT, 4 sec tour win....cant beat that I think

Lemond-Fingon was the best recent stage in the Tour de France. Lemond may hold the record for the fastest time trial, but remember it was only 24.5 km. David Millar almos beat the average speed in the last time trial, which was 49km, in 2003. 54.36 kph- David Millar's time over 49km
54.545 kph- Greg LeMond's time over 24.5 km |

Heh! I obviously picked some key stages but there have been so many more included in the thread. Chiappucci to Sestrieres will remain my favourite ever.
The kit, the bike, the attack, the scenery...everything about that ride showed cycling in a great light. Even the fruitless pursuit by Gianni Bugno. Glad so many of you out there have agreed!!! |

Bump....Roche chasing Delgado. Best stage ever. Goosebump material. I also rate Indurain's 1992 TT in Luxembourg....the Extra-Terrestrial. |

I'm glad someone else thought that Tyler's triumph last year was worth something. It was a super effort and a smart ride. To keep about 8 minutes ahead of the Peleton with 10Ks to go was brilliant. Sure he only won by a few minutes, but what a smart hard ride.
