The phrase "power lunches"is used around here in the political circles meaning "spending other peoples money." This thread is going in a direction that I didn't intend..... And I'll take the blame for that. My point is this..... I believe the ACLU is a organization that very often does good. But it does nothing beyond the call of duty. It is designed around one thing, and that is keeping the flow of cases going to continue feeding the lawyers involved. The people that contribute to it should fully understand what it is , how it recieves it's money, and where the money actually goes. This same logic can be applied to many other organizations too. I believe the "little guy" on the streets can spend his money far more wisely with a local organization that has his political views in mind then with the the ACLU. I believe his money will go farther.... I am a conservative..... I am disapointed with Bush and his spending. The money that went to Iraq could have been used to deal with Technology development, education, and social programs reform. I am not against social programs that work, but I am against programs that continue to fail in their objectives and we continue to fund them. Political issues such as abortion, womens rights , and being politically correct mean nothing to me. They are issues that serve a very small segment of society. I do have issues with the Democratic Party. The main issue I have is that they are allowing the East Coast Liberals run the Party. Dean, Kennedy< Hilary, etc..... The problem with this is that these people do not really represent the average Democrat in this country. And they cannot win an election. Don't they have a clue?? What did they do , but put Dean at the head of the DEM Party after it was shown he was not an individual that American Democrats cared for. .... So in the mean time ..... The dems are losing ground fast... They were handed an election on a silver platter in 2004 and lost it. If they could not beat Bush in 2004, they will never win. If I was a Democrat, I would wish that Kennedy, Dean< Kerry< and Hilary would disappear...... Because if they are involved with the 2008 election, the Republicans will win in a landslide. The Democrats have allowed the liberals to take over the Party..... The Democrats built their party on the backs of the working man , the Labor Unions, and the small man on the street. That guy does not care about womens rights, abortion or anything that the Democrats represent today. The guy on the street cares about feeding his family and the education of his children...... The Democrats run around trying to scream the Republicans stole the election ....It was the liberals that stole the election from the Democrats. They need to look at themselves. They gave the voters in this country no option. The ACLU represents the views of the liberals, not of the Democrats. The average Democrat cringes when it hears of some of the cases the ACLU takes on ...

It is a non-profit organization Wolfix. Lawyers could make much more money elsewhere. It just looks good on one's resume. I think you are being given bad info. possibly by a "red-stater". Incidentally, you indicate that womens rights & abortion represent a "small segment" of the population 52% of the population is female. That is not "small". I stopped reading after the 2nd paragraph becuse it would appear that it, too, might be riddled w/ misperceptions/inaccuracies ![]()

Non-profit has nothing to do with employee pay checks. Matter of fact, if you look at most national non-profit organizations the leadership is highly paid way above the pay scale of most businesses.... Non-Profit simply means the way the organization has set up it's funding and and it's tax status. The non-profit organizations are a huge business in America. They compete with private industry to get the best people. The main thrust of national non profits is getting the public to lay down the cash to maintain the cash flow......

the way this country is "moving", as you state, is away from deficit spending-Bush & the Republican controlled Congress, voluntary wars-Bush/Cheney Inc. w/ daily casualties due to no planning or ignoring/firing Generals who contradict them; among other atrocities committed/omitted by this "good-old-boy" administration ![]()

So, your child dies and I show up at his/her funeral with a sign that says "Burn in Hell" or "Thank God the Little Bastard is Dead," and you're going to run over to me and hand me an aclu business card and a copy of the first amendment? This one is going to lose a lot of support for the aclu. And rightfully so. No, they pick and choose who and what they will represent. They want publicity, which gives them power. If people talk about the strong-arm tactics of the NRA, they gotta mention the aclu in the same breath. People say that when the founding fathers wrote the second amendment, they couldn't have forseen assault weapons, machine pistols, etc. Do you think that when they wrote the first amendment, do you think they could imagine a funeral, for a soldier killed at Valley Forge, being attented by a group holding up signs that say "Burn in Hell" & "Thank God for MiniBalls?" Since you live in DC, why doesn't the aclu sue the district for not letting the citizens carry guns? If freedom of speech means any speech, doesn't the right to keep and bear arms means any arms? Why can't I go down to Pennsylvania Ave and buy a TommyGun? aclu where are you?

How do you explain their defending the KKK's right to march, if they "pick & choose", as you indicate ![]()

$ and publicity would be my guess. And if the KKK wants to stand on the courthouse steps and shout about how they are white and minorities are taking jobs and this and that....then that's freedom of speech and the aclu should back them. But when they start talking about "death to blacks" "Thank God for All Dead Mexicans," that's when the aclu disappears. So why are they backing this boobs from Kansas? If they are, they are suborning hate crimes.

My comment: The ACLU is as guiltyof extremism as the KKK,Christian groups,Muslim groups,Government, media etc.
Some times good ideas or ideologies go too far,not always but sometimes. This is of course my opinion. Just like a gun,the power needs to be used responsibly.

Here is a case of how the ACLU collects money . www.commondreams.org/views06/0328-22.htm
This case is an open and shut case for any attorney. A first year law student could get this thrown out of court. But the ACLU jumps in and this statement gets made...... "After the criminal case is over, Weber says he and Grier may file a civil rights claim." Now if Weber and the ACLU wins who do you think is going to have to pay? The taxpayers. Why would the ACLU want to file a civil rights claim ? To win a judgement that they get to determine outragous fees for services rendered . Then Weber will recieve what is left over, if any. This is consistent with the ACLU. Why would they sue the city PD? Because they have deep pockets. You wouldn't want to sue a homeless person would you? And who is the winner in this case? The ACLU. Who is the loser? The taxpayers. And what is the final result if the ACLU files a civil rights case and wins? The law will not change. The law that says you can have any bumpersticker on your car you want is already in place. Nothing can be changed. However, the ACLU will have more funds to seek out the big cases like this and find civil entities that have deeper pockets. Just more power lunches. Now all the liberals are screaming the ACLU is standing up for civil rights. And on the surface this looks this way. And the ACLU wants you to think this is a case about civil rights. But it sure looks as if they are more interested in making the ACLU lawyers a nice paycheck. The thread that was started " the bushit stops here, in georgia" wanted to show how liberals are being attacked. But if you follow the money in this case, it exposes the ACLU for what it is. A very well marketed organization that exploits the fears of those who donate.

the officer, apparently did not keep up w/ the law not to mention the slur was not spelled correctly.
The article indicated: Quote:
The traffic stop, therefore, is highly likely to have been politically motivated. These types of totalitarian overreaches must be condemned in the harshest possible manner. Fee's & awards vary according to the losing parties status, public/private.

slurs in georgia have long been known to contain many extra syllables...
