I turned to ask a person sitting next to me in the Heathrow Admiral's Club if he could help me figure out how to dial out from the UK to the US on credit card phone...before realizing that it was Stevie Wonder. Not only did he know how, he did it only asking me for the number I was calling and for the calling card to swipe through the phone. He made a joke of keeping the card for helping me. He did everything else and then when he got answer from the number he said in a British accent, "Calling from the UK love. Please hold for your party." Really nice guy.

I don't know anyone famous.... I've met a few celebrities and had short conversations with them....I got invited by Waylon Jennings onto his bus a long time ago "to kick the day off right."
I had several short conversations with Wilie Nelson backstage of his concerts. I managed that because I had a delivery service that brought the headbands that Willie throws out at his concerts. I delivered them to the backstage and they asked me to hang around.
As far as cycling celebrities go, I hung out with several riders after a race that included LeMond way back in the days before he went to Europe.

Over the years several celebrities stopped by the pub I was involved in. A few were authors , a few musicians, and some political canidates that were in town doing business.

What I have found interesting is when you see a celebrity up close, they look so small.

I chatted with BB King at a Keno table at Harrahs casino - Lake Tahoe.

But that's been a few years ago so the thrill is gone.

i don't suppose my hangin' with billy "flo" flores, bassman for the watchband would count, but he is a local legend among those surviving those times.
a true brush with celebrity over about a year, and a truly personable, complimentary, and unassuming gent, no bloated ego.

www.thechocolatewatchband.com

www.roir-usa.com/8272.htm

they are immortalized by, among their other accomplishments, providing soundtrack for the classic film, "riot on sunset strip"

at private parties attended by the creme de la creme of area band members
(think the count five, moby grape, doobie bro.s, steely dan) he would be tapped to play bass.

cds have been made avbl from time to time, rhino records have re-released their albums.

enuff of my shameless name-dropping, at least for now.

I gave Jerry Brown a ride from SFO to his house (an old firehouse) in Pacific Heights. It was when he was running for President but about a week before he'd pick up a Secret Service escort. My friend worked for him on Jerry's phone/computer scheme and asked me to pick him up. He's a really nice guy. I borrowed my dad's Honda Accord - which wasn't as cool as Jerry's old Dart - but infinitely better than my beater Corolla!
My dad didn't want to loan it because Jerry was to liberal for his tastes. My mom made him do it.

Rob Scheider is really tight with my brother in law so I see him once in a while. I went to highschool with his older brother.

Neil Young shops at a local toy store where he gets Lionel trains for his giant set in a warehouse. (It's funny that he buys them there since he owns Lionel trains!) Anyway, I was there with my son who's 6yrs. old at the time, and Neil was there. So my son started talking with him about trains. Really friendly guy.

I rode with Clark Natwick (cyclocross champion) once a few years ago. I raced against his little brother Don back in highschool days. Clark is a very strong rider but we had a very nice conversation while riding - I think he slowed down for me!

Its a small world after all.My brother(a very amateur guitarist) played a few duets with both NY and Steve Stills in a coffee shop many years ago,in Sydney, while they were on an publicised visit.

NY has a trainset?
He has risen enormously in my estimation,as a guitarist, and a person.

I met Kerry Packer,an australian billionaire and media, for want of a better word,"mogul".
He had recently taken up the sport of polo,a sport that his father (Sir Francis,or Frank as he was more commonly known),had excelled in.He had engaged an English girl who had been brought up in the polo tradition (her brother was the captain of the Guards team, her father played for England),as his polo groom. Her daily duties were to exercise his newly acquired string of ponies, six in all, four hours a day for each of them.,and twice a day.
A mate of mine was a friend of hers and volunteered our services to ride work with the ponies. She was happy about it..it's onerous work, exercising that many ponies on your own."Ride one, lead five,".Nope, not fun.So she was grateful for the assistance, and we were able to ride horses that we could never have afforded to buy for ourselves. And I was able to ride an ugly little mare who,if equated to cycling, would have been a Trek Madone,a horse who neckreined with fingertip control. Her name was "Snuggles",and it was a stupid name, but she was the best horse I ever rode. She had a lovely nature, and she was one of KPs favourites, and she cost him $70,000,twenty-five years ago.

When KP arrived for his regular saturday morning practice,he looked at my mate and me rather quizzically,as if he couldn't remember hiring us to ride his ponies, but didn't want to embarrass himself by making the mistake that his father had(sacking someone who didn't work for him).So after we all shook hands and introduced ourselves,my mate and I quietly slid out of the picture.
Crashed a Roxy Music aftershow party by wearing a black T-shirt and pretending to be a roadie.
Raced past Robbie McEwen once, legs pumping and heart trying to burst out of my chest...probably would be more interesting if he had not been parked on the side of the road having a drink at the time.A few other riders...nowhere near as many as the more modest members of the forum have...
None of us are more than a few degrees of separation from anyone else.

I think meeting the Pope wins hands down.
I always thought that he was one of the world's more interesting leaders, and even an old atheist has to agree that for all his religious conservatism he did an enormous amount of good in his time on the planet.
