Even aside from any California internal politics, I also find this view curious for a couple reasons:

1. I assume you refer to a presidential candidacy, for which Arnold is not eligible (not a natural-born citizen). And I personally could never see that law changing any time soon. If anything, there is a smaller chance of that changing now than in recent memory.

2. California politics are not really very important to people outside of California. That's not to say any governorship is not a good stage from which to launch a candidacy (obviously it is common in history). But from what I understand, Arnold carried no current weight on the national stage. To people outside of California, he is a movie actor. And if you are going to make a reference to Reagan's history on this issue, then I refer you back to point #1.

But perhaps I even misunderstood Carrerra's comment anyway.

edit: I should note that - given what little I know of Arnold's performance in California - I enjoy how he is not intimidated by either major party. In that sense, we certainly need more politicians like him who are loyal to their actual ideals for which people elected them than they are to a political party.

You'd know more than I do about Arnold as I aren't in California to judge. I did see him on the news the other day, surprisingly complaining California couldn't cope with current levels of immigration and supporting Bush's plan to tighten things up.
Prior to that, I heard Arnold had cut back funding for public libraries and upset some folks. But I assumed he was reasonably popular and had a promising career ahead in politics.
If not, I figure he'll be back to making movies to try and recapture the limelight in the face of Sly's Rocky 6 (Yo, Adriene!)

He has become surprisingly unpopular in California and will be gone next election.
Don't get em wrong I like Arnold but he has made more enemies than friends.
His spending there is viewed as out of control and wasteful in an already trouble state economy.
It is the democrats that need to put forth a reasonable candidate, as the party leaders are there own worst enemies when picking a candidate that will garner votes.
The US needs a moderate and I don't care which party "he" belongs to.

Arnold does get more attention than most due to his celebrity status, but you are correct that he is not elligble to run for president.
As far as a comparison to himself and Reagan ,they two totally different people in many ways and the 80's were a different time than now.

Either way, I'll keep in mind how much my opinion matters to you next time I am *again* serving on a battlefield for you.

You have a good day yourself.

Incidentally, I thought I'd throw in the fact Arnold used to cycle to the gym from Thal to Gratz which was quite a good ride by bike. It was his only transport - his bike. You can only wonder what a bike would have looked like in Austria back in the fifties (gear range e.t.c.).
Muhammad Ali also had a famous bike that was stolen from him by a bunch of kids and that's how he got into boxing. He never got his bike back, though.

Agreed. Making braod unsubstantiated pronouncements & going about beating one's chest hurts one's standing. Age might also be a factor. The younger one is, the louder they boast

know this from personal experience do you?

what countries have you been to? or better still, write why the US is better than say Aus, UK, Germany, Russia etc..

using known and proven facts of course...

from what you have written in your other thread, the US regularly gets intruders in your home ready to rape and kill, thats why you HAVE to be so heavily armed with guns and explosives in your home...

I completely understand this argument. In fact, I have been on record in this forum as saying I am not proud of "throwing away my vote" in the last presidential election. I simply couldn't, in good conscience, place my support behind either of the two options I was presented. I gives me no satisfaction to say so or to have been in that situation. I am certainly a complete fan of making your opinion heard and ensuring it counts (in the form of a vote). I also don't believe that I am ever necessarily "right" about any given issue. All we can do is keep an open mind and conduct ourselves in the way we think is best.

What I do fault is those who don't keep an open mind and conduct themselves only in the way that a particular political party wants. I admit to harboring negative feelings for those folks, whoever they may be.

Also, I appreciate the sentiment, but please grant me no special treatment for my profession. I'm just an average dude. There are many many honorable paths through a life. And there are good and bad people along all of those paths. Feel free to disagree with me as much as you want - and even tell me about it. Nobody around here has a monopoly of knowledge on any particular subject, and I never believe that I am *necessarily* right, although I will, like everyone, occasionally be pretty sure of myself. Other times I may have no freakin' clue what I'm talking about. But I try to admit it when that's the case.

cheers.

Are you speaking of McCain The republican smear-machine destroyed him in S. Carolina when he was running for president YET he still stands on the stage w/ whassisname-Dubya. I lost the last amt of respect for him for that act of groveling to a guy who was bar-hopping in Alabama during 'Nam. Got your action figure of Bush when he landed on the carrier to state "mission accomplershed" 3 years ago

I personally believe you could accuse the vast majority of our Congresspeople of being guilty of what I describe. I see much more loyalty to political parties than I see any free, original thought coming out of Washington. And this at a time of war. They should all be ashamed of themselves. They pursue playground-style battles while our folks are in real battles in another part of the world. Shameful.
All in my humble opinion of course. Neither party has the high ground on this issue.

There are notable exceptions, but they are few and far between. I don't agree with everything Murtha says (or even half of it really), but I do love to hear him speak out regardless because he is the only guy with the cajones to speak out on this issue and try to instigate a meaningful debate. Everyone else (on both sides of the aisle) is cowering in their boots and waiting for the "party line" to speak for them. We elected them to do more, regardless of their particular stance. I have grown quite disgruntled over this issue as of late (the partisanship).

Metro dc means exactly that-"metropolitan dc". That includes dc, md, & va. I live in va. Do a search for zip code 22102. You probably should be sitting down when you do this Incidentally, I am white; as if that has much to do w/ this discussion & I was in the Gulf before Bush "41" invaded.
