Kirkby track near Liverpool's getting in a pretty bad state. Built 1964, 485 metre ashphalt, it's getting bulldozed at the end of the season so there's been little or no maintenance recently. The kids around there are animals & I've heard of bricks & rocks being thrown at riders before now but I've not experienced it. Usual assortment of cracks, bumps, dips and weeds but you get to know where they are. I'll be there tonight as it happens.

After training at Kirkby Manchester Velodrome seems soooooo fast

In São Paulo, Brazil there is a pretty bad small concrete velodrome. I believe is a 350 meter track. I bet back in the day it was really nice.

The one in Northbrook Illinois was terrible, had speedbumps and pot holes. Luckily they closed it for renovation. Its unbelievable that Northbrook and the surrounding towns are the wealthiest in middle America and yet the drome almost couldnt get funding if not for some nice anonymous donor that gave them what they needed. Cheap bastards.

Coventry UK had a track called "the Butts" it was sort of a "D" shape tarmac effort with 4 square corners, very shallow banks and loads of cracks and potholes, it felt like you had to turn sharply to get into the backstraight and leaving the final banking for the home straight inevitably saw riders aiming for the fence, too many of which unfortunately ended up in the stands, totally rubbish track and as slow as a pancake. Cardiff's Maindy Stadium which is now a nice red cement track had a series of very pronounced dips in the home straight, which felt quite like going over a series of small hump back bridges just as you approached the line, it was renovated in the early 1990's which rectified this problem.

Kissena has be totally redone, yes way back when it was bad and we had a big hump in the last 50 meters that you go airborne. That was then now I can't wait to ride it next year.

They just pumped some money into Kissena and fixed it up. It's a smooth ride and weed free now.

I guess we'd need SCUBA gear to race that one.
I'll give it a go!

Anyone seen the velodrome in Canberra, Australia? I believe it holds the world record for the most number of falls in one day! They seem to have mucked up the angles and you can become airborne as you enter the home straight! It's okay if you are an experienced track rider but if you are not sure what you are doing you can certainly frighten yourself.

Hi,
just seen your post about Kirkby track. I believe that it will still be in use for 2005 and the track league will be running again on Wednesday nights. As you say, it's in a pretty poor state and hasn't had any maintenance for many years. I did a meeting there last year and before we go on the track, we all had to walk round to pick up the glass and stones that the local youths had seen fit to put there!
I remember the place in the early seventies when it was bustling and loved by large numbers of riders. Now it unloved and has an air of desolation about it. What a great shame!

Waimate and Temuka Tracks in the South Island of New Zealand. Flat as, bumpy and Temuka is D shaped. Only used once a year at New Year. Still great atmosphere and I won the feature race on Temuka one year!

From reading all of the submitions I feel sort of proud to have had the opportunity to ride many, like Kirkby, Coventry, Cardiff, Delhi, Kessina, Northbrooke.

I know that these tracks were or are in ruff shape, but the racing was hard and always made you a better bike rider.

Thanks
