German hate crimes......

I came across this in a Houston newspaper. It might not have been news except for the fact it happened in Germany, a country with a recent history of country-wide hate.
Is this a case of "hooliganism" before the World Cup or does it show a deeper problem ? The part of the newspaper article that stood out to me was the line.................. "In the east, the younger generation is particularly unsettled in terms of its situation and future opportunities" used by the Lutheran spokesman. This was one of the factors that pushed the Germans in the 1930's.

I have gotten the feeling , [and I may be wrong on this,] but that the German labor system of taking care of all workers is facing some major problems in the not too distant future.
And hasn't there been some problems with bringing immigrants into Germany and taking German jobs?

I realize all this happens in other larger countries. Germany is not immune to problems of a "racist" nature. But history on more then one occassion has shown Germany a country that does not take percieved problems lightly.

Rash of Hate Crimes Reported in Germany

BERLIN — A rash of attacks against foreigners has erupted in the east of the country, authorities said Friday, underlining concern over hate crimes as Germany prepares to host the soccer World Cup.

In the eastern city of Weimar, eight assailants insulted, kicked and punched, three men from Mozambique and Cuba on Thursday evening. The 46-year-old Mozambican was hospitalized with head injures, and his two companions were lightly injured.

The victims had been at a party on the outskirts of Weimar. Police spokeswoman Ilka Vollmar said the suspected assailants, aged 19 to 29, were arrested. Two of them injured themselves as they tried to flee and were under police guard at a hospital, authorities said.

In the port town of Wismar, a 36-year-old Indian man was kicked and punched Thursday by five men who sang the German national anthem and shouted "fascist slogans," said Christian Pick, a regional prosecutor. The suspected assailants, aged 20 to 24, were arrested.

A 29-year-old Turkish man was beaten Thursday afternoon in Berlin after a scuffle with four men who appeared to belong to the far-right. Ten suspects were arrested.

The surge of attacks comes some two weeks before the start of the World Cup, the world's largest sporting event. The first round begins June 9 and runs through the 23rd.

The anti-immigrant far right has no seats in the national parliament, but occasional successes for fringe parties in state elections and high-profile hate crimes have raised concern _ especially in the formerly communist and economically struggling east.

"In the east, the younger generation is particularly unsettled in terms of its situation and future opportunities _ that is an environment in which extremism arises easily," Bishop Wolfgang Huber, the head of Germany's Lutheran Evangelical Church told the Berliner Zeitung daily.

"In the eastern states, there is the phenomenon of hostility to foreigners without any foreigners," he added, alluding to the east's relative isolation under communism and relatively small number of immigrants.

"The few people with a different skin color in the east are then particularly in danger," he said.

They were a fearful bunch, but they have managed to be rid of all intelligent forms of life, killed every academic or scholar that may have been there. Their scientists have all gone elsewhere since WWII. The finest minds that this country once had, are no longer. All that is left is a bunch of kids who take woodshop and want jobs guaranteed. I don't fear this pit of piss.

All that is left is a bunch of dull normals, so to speak, and I think that these genetic, loathesome, xenophobes who think they have a right to certain things in life.....well, they can all drop dead and go to hell.

Honestly, they don't bother me a bit.....they are just the descendents of murderous, thieving, mentally ill persons....and nothing more.

England have a large neo-nazi population, a large contingent of which will be travelling to Berlin in two weeks time. I think Germany is just flexing its muscles and letting forigners know that they wont be a walk over. The German hate crimes have always been there, just as in most countries, thiers just hits the headlines because of the worlds biggest sporting event is landing on thier shores, thousand of foerigners will flood thier cities...and with thier 'reputation' it makes excellent reading, especially in America where Euro-bashing is the national pastime. You cant mention Germany over there without the word Nazi cropping up.

I am a fan of the Bundasliga and i hope Germany does well in the world cup, after the mighty Sweden of course.

Hard to choose a winner this time round : Italy ? Hardly likely with the corruption row.
France? team seems a bit old.

That statement is so far from the truth. Rarely do you ever hear of anyone bashing Europe here in the streets. Bashing Mexico, bashing The Far East, Middle East, but rarely Europe. You forget that people here are usually desendents from Europe. In my part of the country the majority of the people are either Irish or German. Many of the older people here in my area can still speak a little German. The guy who just left my house was born in Berlin. {raised here though} There are a few towns around here that still have large "Oktoberfest" festivals with a very strong German feeling about it.
The internatonal students that are European are made to feel so at home that they come to feel as if this is their second home. Families in the area practically adopt them.

The "nazi" thing ??? That is just blown out of porportion by TV/movies.

France is the only place you ever hear the bashing going on.
Even on this forum when the conversation turns around to "Europe bashing" it is usually the result of a defensive nature. "American bashing" is what is going on.... I have sen so much stereotyping of Americans on here That I have to laugh.
When traveling to the states, have you not gotten a real warm welcome? [ NYC aside, we "Americans" do not even get treated well there} That welcome is genuine.

I didn't want this thread to get into the Holocaust. And the very mention of Germany and "hate crimes" would naturally bring the topic up. I am guilty of this, but not on purpose.
What I was looking at was if the "Hooliganism" that was going on is just "hooliganism" for the sake of itself, or was it the result of immigration?
Is there a growing frustration in Europe of some sort directed at immigrants?

We see some frustration of illegals operating here in the states. But so far no wide spread acts of "hooliganism" has been directed at the Mexicans.

America projects itself through the media. We, the people overseas, get our information on America largely though its media.

Have you ever noticed that in Hollywood movies all the 'bad' guys are either English or German? all the good guys as wholesome god-fearing young american men from simple backgrounds? Its sending a subconcious message to the youth of America that they should be suspicious of the motives of Europeans.

Think of a good-guy bad guy movie. Rocky, Die Hard, The Lion King (disney)

infact having a 3 year old, i have sat through everything that disney/pixar/dreamworks has to offer....its shocking what kids are learning about racism.
yes, i had a very warm welcome, most people had stories to tell of thier friends/relatives from Scotland.
